The 61st annual meeting of the Cheshire County Dartmouth Alumni Association was held at the Keene Country Club on Wednesday evening, December 27, 1972. President Ham Chase '47 welcomed about 50 members and guests including Karen Schofield "76, the first coed from our association to be admitted to Dartmouth. Karen spoke briefly about her activities at the school and says she "just loves it."
Dr. Charles Schofield '47, who attended the Club Officers meeting in Hanover, reported that the administration depended to a great extent on the alumni clubs for help in job placement and recruiting. Job placement has been emphasized lately because of the new four semester system whereby students will have vacations during periods of the year other than the normal summer months.
A nominating committee composed of Ken Arwe '40, Fritz Geller '43, and Dick Bowlen '30 brought in the following slate of officers for the ensuing year: President, Whitcomb Wells '44; vice president, Dr. Charles Schofield '47, and secretary-treasurer, Russell G. Putney '22.
The main speaker of the evening was Jerry Berndt, head freshman coach and wrestling coach at Dartmouth. He gave a most interesting and enthusiastic talk, starting off by admitting his hesitation at leaving his home grounds in the MidWest to come to a small town in New Hampshire and where he had always understood the inhabitants were cool and unfriendly. Happily, he discovered the exact opposite to be true. Hanover is unique. The people most cordial and the Dartmouth athletic program tops. In his travels in the Deep South and Southwest he has found the alumni most helpful and the backbone of the recruiting program.
Jerry also discussed the problems involved in coaching a football team that won its fourth straight Ivy League Championship. He believes his freshman team has potential but must mature quickly to help the varsity next fall. The showing of the film "Football Highlights" topped off a pleasant evening.
