The Marriott in Saddlebrook, N. J., served as the site of our club's biggest event.of the year. With the aid of the Bergen, Monmouth, Princeton and Tri-County clubs, 334 were on hand December 12 to hear President Kemeny speak in two sessions. In spite of a freezing rain, the afternoon session drew 225 prospective students, parents, and guidance counselors. The house was packed. Dick Sameth '59, Bill Carter'39, Bob Fenderick '32, and Lou Springsteen '48 put the program together with Ray Reitman '36 introducing President Kemeny. The students "had done their homework" and were well versed and deeply interested in the Dartmouth Plan. President Kemeny successfully fielded questions from the floor for 45 minutes after his introductory remarks, creating an even greater interest in the College.
The evening session was for alumni, wives, and parents of students in Hanover. Dinner followed the cocktail hour. Included at the head table were president and chairman Wayne French '59, DickFlicker '46 (president, Bergen Club), Al LaBreque '58 (president, Monmouth Club), and VanIngham '27 (president, Tri-County). President Kemeny spoke in his usual eloquent manner. Arrangements for the affair were handled by JohnBarker '55, Charlie Parton '63, and John Wardrop'59 along with the diligent Essex and Morris telephone committee.
Another highlight of the fall was a new enrollment activity for our club. Nine alumni headed by Tom Swartz '49, Bill Carter '39, and Dick Sameth '59 hosted a luncheon for 26 area high school guidance counselors. Thirteen schools from Essex County and 13 schools from Morris County were represented at the November 17 meeting held at the William Pitt restaurant. The success of this meeting was evident in the turnout for President Kemeny a month later.
