Faced with projections of rising costs, the Dartmouth Trustees last month voted a tuition increase of $70 per term, from $1020 to $1090, as well as increases in room and board rates, effective with this year's summer term.
The Board decided that all student charges henceforth will be computed on a term basis now that the College is operating on a year-round, four-term academic schedule. Under the new Dartmouth Plan, students may be on campus for as few as one or two terms during any 12-month period or for as many as four terms, making the old concept of annual charges no longer meaningful.
Similarly, since the four terms vary somewhat in length, room and board charges for 1973-74 will also vary, with fall rates being the highest and summer rates the lowest. Freshman year, requiring the regular fall-winter-spring sequence of terms, will be the most expensive, with tuition, room and board totaling an average of $4816 for 1973-74. This includes the extra charge for freshman orientation week, as well as supplemental medical insurance previously optional but now made a part of regular health service coverage for all students and included in tuition.
The increase in room rates will not be large, averaging $7 per term. The estimated average for 1973-74 is $160 for the summer term and $205 for the other three terms.
Board will be increased about 6% and will amount to $264 for the summer term, 5317 ($337 for freshmen) for the fall, and $297 for the winter and spring.
In related actions, the Trustees authorized a $220 increase in the total three-term tuition for Tuck School, from $3210 to $3430, and a $210 increase in tuition for the first year of Medical School, from $3060 to $3270, Tuition for the second and third years of Medical School will he announced later,
The announced charges for undergraduates will apply also to Thayer School and to the graduate programs within the College of Arts and Sciences.
The supplemental medical coverage, previously optional and now to be included in tuition, is designed to protect students while they are away from Hanover and for illness or injury requiring protracted medical care.
