FRESHMAN TEAMS
MARCH 1973

There are really only two "pure" freshman teams during the winter season these days - hockey and basketball - and both are having excellent campaigns.

With five games remaining, Jim Higgins' frosh skaters had a 10-1 record and had the pleasure of tasting success against Harvard's frosh for the first time since 1958 - and not once, but twice.

There are a flock of good skaters - Tom Fleming, Sandro Orlando, Ken Pettit, Danny Tomlak, Gordie Miles, Dan Leigh, Ron King, and Kevin Downing, to name a few - and a steady goalie in Dan Ringsred from Duluth, Minn.

The result has been a barrage of more than eight goals per game and a string of wins that has extended from an opening game loss to the Boston University jayvees.

The most satisfying wins were against Harvard, though, by scores of 8-5 and 106. The knowledged observers feel that Higgins' first two lines could fit in easily with the varsity right now.

In basketball, Coach Serge DeBari's team has been averaging nearly 90 points per game in building a 10-2 record. The conspicuous scorer has been rangy Adam Sutton, a 6-5 forward from Chicago who has averaged nearly 22 points per game and showed icy composure as he sank two foul shots with one second remaining that provided an 82-81 win over a Yale frosh team that arrived at Alumni Gym with 14 straight wins.

Perhaps the man who will help the varsity quickest, though, is 6-8 center Mark Donoghue who is scoring over 15 per game and grabbing nearly 12 rebounds per game.

Two other forwards - Captain Jim Beattie and Bill Healey - along with guards Dennis McCann and Donnie Lambert are the regulars who look like they'll help the varsity fortunes.

Dartmouth Harvard Rugby On April 22 the Dartmouth and Harvard Rugby Clubs will meet at the Rivers School in Weston, Mass., with the winner being awarded the Charles River Dartmouth Cup. All alumni and friends are invited to attend this game which is being sponsored by the Charles River Dartmouth Club for the benefit of the Dartmouth Scholarship Fund. The kick-off is at 1:30 and many are expected to arrive early enough to picnic and enjoy the fine spring air ahead of time.
