Tap Secret
June 1989

In response to a public dialogue initiated by Casque and Gauntlet, the tapping procedure of the six senior societies has been revamped. No longer will potential members have to make hasty decisions with litte knowledge about the organization. Starting next year, juniors tapped for C & G, Fire and Skoal (an open, coed group), Phoenix and Cobra (the two women's secret societies), and Sphinx and Dragon (the two men's secret societies) will have three days to make a decision. During the three day-period, the open societies can share information about themselves. (The secret societies remain secret.) These new rules were drafted in response to some C & G '89s who voiced concern about the exclusive nature of their society. "Students throughout the campus are raising more and more questions about secret organizations and elitist organizations," notes Dean of the College Edward Shanahan. What isn't a campus secret is that the two female secret societies meet in Shanahan's home.
