A five-match win streak to close the season at 7-5 plus a ranking of sixth in the intercollegiate nine-man team ratings is the product of the squash team's season.
John Kenfield's team, playing without top player Rick Woolworth (the captain- elect from Lancaster, Pa.) who had the flu for the final three matches, knocked over Amherst, Rochester and Cornell in a fine closing flurry.
The wins over Amherst and Cornell, both by 8-1 scores, were particularly rewarding since both of those teams had trimmed Yale, a 5-4 winner over the Green, earlier in the season.
Dartmouth's wrestlers finished 10-7-1 but managed only one winner in the New England meet.
Jim Conterato, working at 190 pounds, took the New England title in his event but that was the best Jerry Berndt's team could do in finishing fourth.
It might have been otherwise except that freshman Darrald Gibson injured his shoulder and had to forfeit in the final of the 167-pound match after advancing impressively through the field.
Chuck Estin, who was unbeaten in 14 regular season matches, lost in the semifinals at the New Englands, as did heavyweight Reggie Williams.
Captain Steve Morelli from Tulsa, Okla., closed his career as the winningest wrestler in Dartmouth history. He had 35 career victories. Estin, a junior, is 32-2 with a season to go.
For the third straight year, Mike Pancoe from Glencoe, Ill., is the Ivy League and New England champion in still rings competition.
Pancoe paced Dartmouth to second place in both the Ivy and New England meets but missed in his bid to qualify for the NCAA meet.
Dartmouth had two other Ivy League champions as sophomore Greg Hakanen won the horizontal bar event and freshman Jack Nicholson took the side horse competition.
In women's sports, Dartmouth's squash team had a superb performance from Barbara Sands who took second place in the national women's intercollegiate tournament.
The women's team had a 4-3 record in squash, while in basketball the ladies had a 1-4 record in their first season.
