Margaret and I are glad to be back in Hanover after driving about 4,000 miles from here to Naples, Fla. ... and points between. Our intentions were to see a few more classmates en route, but time-priorities-traffic all combined to reduce the score. We regret having had to pass up Clearwater-Sarasota but we elected to return up the middle of the state instead of the west coast and it's traffic snarls. We'll see some of you we missed here May 4-5, for Class Officers' Weekend. Now we're back at routines, plus income tax forms. As I write (April 3) our Reunion Chairman Don Wilbur and Virginia are off to Europe for a holiday. He has worked hard with the committee on our 50th Reunion plans. Kenand Ina Foley and Bleike and Doris Reed are on the roads back home; Dana and Gretchen Bent left as we were arriving. Stan and Barbara Chittick had their fun in Mexico ... That's a sample of '24-on-wheels this spring; only a sample.
Tradition is wonderful, and more so when the "melody lingers on" after a change. So I am delighted to receive cards on various occasions but especially treasure the annual St. Patrick's Day card from Bill McNiff, who enjoys retirement in Ohio. Funny thing: study habits persist, but the input seems to linger less easily today. Had you noticed?
Two items will be reported in the next (I hope) Class Letter: (1) the change from tailgating on Observatory Hill on Saturday noon of the Penn game; and (2) seats for the class at said game. Correspondence on the former shows the usual pros-and-cons: one prominent and faithful classmate objects to the move ("We're not that old"); another says, in effect, "Many thanks ... it's about time." Just one point to ponder: we have to guarantee a modest minimum to the Inn. I'm not worried!
Don Hull living up near the Van Huycks, has a son (Richard) who has scholarly interests other 1 an his Dad's medicine or more pastoral-artistic pursuits: teaching History, with his Ph.D. in 1968 in African History but a strong interest dating back to 1965. This is a very live aspect of History, here at Dartmouth as well as elsewhere.
Finally, two short items: (1) to thank Spud for designing and printing the attractive letterhead for 50th reunion stationery; and (2) a very brief note that we have lost another classmate as of March 25: Don Day. I will have an obituary elsewhere in this issue.
