Congratulations are in order for Paul Holzer, who received a Social Justice Award from the College in January. Paul has spent almost all of his time since graduation helping those in need. After graduation he stepped into a fellowship position with the Common Ground Community, HDFC, in Manhattan. After a year as the economic development fellow Paul became manager of special projects, where he trained formerly homeless adults as employees of a Ben & Jerrys Partner Shop. Paul then moved to Washington, D.C., to work with at-risk youth at the Latin American Youth Centers Youth Build program. As GED instructor, education coordinator and college counselor he facilitated successful transitions to post-secondary education, oversaw curriculum development and supervised other teachers at the program. He also served as a founding board member of the Youth Build Public Charter School in northwest Washington, D.C. Paul is now the director of higher education at the Latin American Youth Center, where he oversees four college preparation programs that prepare atrisk minority youth for successful entrance to and completion of college. Paul also serves on the board of the New Futures Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to at-risk urban youth who lack the resources to pay for college. If that wasn't enough, Paul was recently engaged to Allison Aboud. They were engaged in Washington, D.C., in December and then took a two-week "pre-wedding honeymoon" in Italy, driving through the countryside of Umbria. Congratulations on the award and engagement!
Mitzi Zarfoss wrote in to let us know that "after one-year stints in Columbia, Missouri, Madison, Wisconsin, and Springfield, Massachusetts, I am really happy to report that I matched at the University of Illinois for a three-year veterinary ophthalmology residency I start in July 2007 in Urbana-Champaign. If any alums find themselves in central Illinois or need an ophthalmology referral for their pet, look me up!"
In early November Heather Parsons and Ben Wallace-Wells were down in New Orleans, where Megan Cummins married Adam Semel (Wesleyan '99) at the New Orleans Museum of Art. "Megan and Adam met while she was in law school and he was in architecture school in Boston. The wedding was gorgeous and a total blast. They were married in a sculpture garden at sundown and led friends and family into the museum for the reception behind a jazz band in a classic New Orleansian second line' march. We had a wonderful time and both Megan and Adam were terrifically happy. We see them a bunch when we're up in Brooklyn and they're doing well."
