The College has sold the 6,500-acre John F. Gile Memorial Forest, located in the towns of Springfield and Wilmot, N.H., to the State of New Hampshire.
The acquisition of the Forest was made possible by a federal grant of $404,500, half of the appraised value; a state appropriation of $195,500; and a waiver by the College of the remainder, more than one quarter of the $809,000 appraisal figure.
Dartmouth purchased the property for $68,000 in 1956 from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gardner of Gilford, N.H., who had accumulated the land for their son, an accident victim in 1953 at the age of 18. It was named in honor of Dr. John F. Gile '16, a Hanover physician and a Trustee of the College, who had taken care of Mrs. Gardner when her son was born.
New Hampshire will protect the forest by establishing it as a state park and wildlife preserve. Dartmouth, which periodically had lumbered the tract, will place the proceeds of the sale in its endowment funds.
