Four members of 31's beach head in Hanover were officials recently at the Dartmouth Relays held in Leverone Field House. The four were IrvBettman, John Cogswell, Les McKenny, and Shep Wolff. There were over 700 entries and events went on day and night. Shep says the Relays are now recognized as one of the big annual track events in the country.
If you read your copy of Modern Maturity for November you saw the article which mentioned the doings of Bob and Jean Dilley in San Miguel. Mexico. They're building a new home there and reveling in flower gardens.
Jack Warwick sent along a clip about HowieCrosse from the New York Post - all about banks and sound credit standards' flexibility and supply shortages. If you and I said these things they'd sound ordinary, but Howie is the president of the N.Y. State Bankers Association as well as vice chairman of Franklin National Bank of New York City, and what he says carries weight.
Russ Beckwith is quoted in Tuck Today, saying he's still having fun in the boondocks, serving banks, colleges, and corporations with an executive search operation with guaranteed applicant performance. Finds time to vacation in Sardinia, Spain, and Portugal, so things aren't too rigorous.
From Dick Holbrook a letter, several enclosures and the following comment, "DougMorris attended his first Dartmouth Club of Phoenix meeting in December. I arrived a little late, so naturally my first question to him was 'How long have you been here? What have they elected you to?' By the enclosed you can see that, having arrived in Sun City in late summer, he's now running the joint." The clipping describes Doug's election as president of the Sun City Taxpayers Association. Yoicks.
Dick also enclosed a copy of a British publication, Storyville 50 which contains a lengthy article by Dick entitled "Our Word Jazz." Dick, as you will remember, is a jazz discologist and also an authority on the origins of jazz. He does these things in addition to staying active in the advertising, research, and public relations business.
Doug Morris sent along a clip of the Sun City Citizen with further information on the taxpayers association. (Seems as if they are about to hold a tax protest meeting.) However, he penned a note in the upper right corner relating to his bicycle trip in 1930 from Hanover to Boston: ". . . and what's more, I did pedal from Hanover to Belmont in 16 hours and 45 minutes despite the tender ministrations of certain Circle Bar-X-ers who plugged the horn with tinfoil and took the bulb out of the head light. That was a quiet and dark midnight leg of a trip that I wouldn't attempt again for the proverbial millions. For two weeks every time I stood up my knees made a fist. Ever heard of anyone with a charlie horse in his Adams apple? I had one. I fell off that damn bike so often I thought I was a yo-yo." Just as I always suspected - a thrill-seeker.
From Ernie Moore a good spate of family news: "Roberta presented us with a grandson in the fall, Bruce married a nice gal from nearly Burlington, making all four married 'uns now Cathie, Kevin, and Jason moved up to New. buryport from Baltimore so we now have three within an hour of us. Mike and Robin still in the Army in Missouri and we are waiting to hear if they will be out in February. Mike wants to go on to Medical School but there is still a question."
More retirements - Duncan Tingle from Armstrong Cork, Dr. Ralph Hunter from Mary Hitchcock Hospital where he has served as the chairman of the neurology section. He also has been clinical professor of medicine in neurology for the Dartmouth Medical School. Duncan was senior vice president for corporate planning and development for Armstrong.
Gaylord Freeman, still chairman and chief executive of the First National Bank of Chicago, is grooming three possible successors, one of whom will be named when Gay retires.
The Maine Times considers that Spence Miller is one of the five men who run the State of Maine. In a February issue there was a cover story about these leaders.
In the swim or out of the swim, '31-ers are still pulling their weight.
