Condolences and best wishes for success go out to Harthon "Bud" Munson this month who takes over Russ Carlson as '48 Class Agent. Bud has the unenviable job of trying to emulate the great work done by Russ over the past few years, especially during the Class' 25th of last year when '48 delivered an unbelievable sum excess of 579 thousand to the Alumni Fund. Bud's goal in this year's Drive is $22 thousand, nothing like last year's amount, but still far and away above the approximately $18 thousand we delivered in the last normal campaign two years ago.
Bud has agreed to take on the task in spite of the great amount of work involved, and in spite also of the twin ogres of inflation and investment slump which are to some extent hitting the wallets of all members of the Class (not to mention the College where, according to a recent Bulletin, problems involving fuel prices, inflation, and falling endowment yield could this year cause a negative impact of $2 or S3 million and the College's worst financial crisis in several decades"). Bud, your work has been cut out for you. You'll have help from your regional and assistant agents, however, and just maybe, maybe, the present seriousness of the financial problems of our Dartmouth will lead us, Eleazer's sons, to hitch up our socks sufficiently to help get the College on the Hill past this new crisis so that the institution's educational opportunities won't have to be cut. Here's hoping. Bud, we in '48 give you the support you need and do our share in this year's Drive.
John Van Raalte in New York sent along a clipping from the financial section of The NewYork Times about an advertising campaign being conducted for Wolfschmidt Vodka by Wyse Advertising, Cleveland, a new agency of which Marc Wyse and his wife Lois are respectively president and vice president/creative director. According to the article, the ads will appear in a number of magazines. They will show young couples, create a feeling of romance, and promote Wolfschmidt as a means to get something started. Sounds better than sea breezes. Good luck with the campaign. Marc, and with your new enterprise. Is Lois soon to write a new book of children's poems?
John also advised having read that DaveMeeker, president of Hobart Manufacturing Company in Troy, Ohio, has been elected a V.P. of the National Association of Manufacturers. Congratulations, Dave.
Last month we mentioned Bob Douglas' having attended a Dartmouth luncheon in a new Houston restaurant where they served great but inexpensive martinis. Joan Hier, Alumni Magazine Class Notes Editor and wife of Fritz Hier '44, wrote in response, "Too bad that restaurant had to go out of business. Imagine serving 25c martinis to a bunch of Dartmouths!"
Received a very welcome letter from Bill Carter '20, "now resident in Phoenix and secretary of his class, who was Professor of Economics when we '48s were students in Hanover. Many of you probably knew him and know his son Doug '49 who is with the USGS/NASA Earth Resources Satellite Program in Washington. Professor Carter corrected my mistake in mis-identifying the Bill Mortons '28 and '32 in an earlier set of notes, a much appreciated favor.
Here in Miami a few nights ago the local Dartmouth Club had the pleasure of listening to the present Dean of Freshmen in Hanover, Ralph Manuel '58, speak about today's Dartmouth and its student body. Manuel appears a worthy successor to the previous line of fine men in his postiion represented in our day by the deservedly popular "Pudge" Neidlinger. Manuel's description of student and attitude, male and female, loyalty and character, humor and spirit led me to feel that the fine things we loved about Dartmouth and Hanover in our day over 25 years ago are still there in the College of today. Hope those of you who don't get back to Hanover often have an opportunity to hear him or another official of the College on their frequent appearances before alumni groups around the nation.
Apologies for so little direct news of '48 this month. Perhaps the next 30 days will get our minds off Watergate, the energy crisis, etc., so we can do better.
