With college applications falling off nationwide and erstwhile staid institutions of higher learning resorting to such hoopla as paid advertisements and mobile admissions offices to attract students, Dartmouth received this year a record number of applications for the Class of 1978.

Admissions Director Edward T. Chamberlain Jr. '36 reports that 7,760 men and women completed applications for approximately 1,050 places in next year's freshman class, an increase of 580 - or eight per cent - above last year.

Applications from student hopefuls last year represented a 25 per cent increase over the year before, a dramatic rise generally attributed to the initiation of coeducation and year-round operation.

Of this year's applications, Chamberlain announced, 5,680 were from men, 2,080 from women.

This hardy fellow enjoyed a relatively mild winter nestled in a crevice in the bricks ofCollege Hall. When April arrived, probably as no surprise to him, it snowed and froze.
