Howard N. Newman '56 has been appointed first president of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, established last year as a confederation of the Dartmouth Medical School, the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, the Hitchcock Clinic, and the Veterans Administration Center in White River Junction.
A graduate also of the Tuck School and Temple University Law School, Newman will resign from his current position as Commissioner of the Medical Services Administration in "the Social and Rehabilitation Service of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to assume his new duties July 1.
As chief executive officer, Newman will serve as secretary of the Joint Council, the Center's governing body which includes representatives of the four organizations which make up the confederation.
A Board of Overseers composed of 15 leaders in medicine, business, and education has recently been created to assist the Medical School toward full implementation of its renewed M.D. program. The board is chaired by Merlin K. DuVal '44, Dean of the University of Arizona's College of Medicine and former Assistant Secretary of HEW for Health and Scientific Affairs.
