The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has made a grant of $650,000 to the College for the support of non-tenured teaching positions in the humanities.
Starting in the fall of 1976, and continuing for three years, $150,000 will be spent to establish and support three new assistant professorships for two- or threeyeer periods. The appointees will be known as Mellon Visiting Assistant Professors; the positions will normally not be renewed.
Starting in 1979, income from the remaining half-million dollars, to be set aside in an endowment fund, will be used to maintain two assistant professorships per year.
Making the announcement, President Kemeny commented on the grant's helpfulness to the College in three particular areas: alleviating overcrowding in some disciplines, permitting additional appoinrments to maintain the critical size of a department, and supporting experimental developments in the undergraduate curriculum.
