Thanks to Class Treasurer Lou Perry and others we have a sprinkling of items this month about '48s scattered here and there about the globe. Lou passed along some of the notes he received as attachments to the class dues sent in by members of the Class over the past few months, and these provide interesting and pleasurable reading - except for two items of deep sadness.

Since late October Lou has been an investment executive with the New York broker, Shearson Hayden Stone, Inc. As such he's selling all types of securities, not simply money market instruments. Lou says that in his spare time he's still painting oils and watercolors as well as making silk screen prints and block prints. A joint exhibition of his and another artist's work was held at the Seamen's Church Institute in downtown Manhattan in June/July last year. Lou has also developed an interest in painting handcarved wooden ducks, an interest which combines well with friend Al McKee's singular hobby of collecting old duck hunting decoys. Al, resident in Millersville, Pa., has a son, Steve, who is in the U.S. Navy and studying Russian in Monterey, Calif.

A note from Ellen Wales Miller in Portland, Ore., was of particular interest to me in that it not only talked of her husband, Dr. Dave, and the three Miller daughters, but also of Mt. Moosilaukee and its old "summit house" and summer crew traditions. Ellen wrote that Dave is thoroughly enjoying his general surgery practice as well as his love of fishing, running the rapids in rivers within access of Portland, and skiing - plus the beach and tennis. Daughters Wendy and Gail are in college, while Beth is in high school. Dave certainly knew Moosilaukee as a '48 undergrad, but by the time we were students in Hanover the old summit house had burned down from lightning, and the only structure remaining on top was the Winter Cabin. The hut crew traditions and laughs were Only a memory even in our Dartmouth days, but I remember them with Ellen's nostalgia from my earlier days in Hanover as a local town kid when climbing and ski trips to Moosilaukee were frequent.

Congratulations to Warren Daniell on two counts. He is president of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, Thayer School's alumni body, and also the father of Beth of the Dartmouth Class of 1977. Warren and wife Dot recently visited Beth in Bucharest where Beth was spending the fall term, courtesy of Dartmouth's Department of Government. The Daniells clearly are doers.

Although we don't have further information, we note with pride that Jere Poole's rank in the Air Force has risen to lieutenant colonel. Jere was in that first civilian '4B contingent which entered Dartmouth as freshmen in July '44. If memory serves, he roomed in Crosby, at that time a dorm, but later left for the service. The Pooles now reside in Berwyn, Pa. Another Keystone Stater is Ed Rutherford who lives in not-so-far-away West Chester, the same town in which Bill Atwood is at home, according to my 1966 Alumni Directory. Phil Shepard, like Jere, has also remained in the Armed Services. He's in the Navy, has a New York APO number which means we don't know his exact whereabouts. Phil is a downeaster, however, and calls Yarmouth, Maine, home, not far from Sam Wilkinson in Lewiston, also the home of Maine's new independent governor who beat out both regular party candidates last November in pledging to reduce the cost of government. A neighbor, Sam? Lt. Colonel Dave Karukin is a further '48 who has remained in Uncle Sam's Armed Forces. Dave is stationed in Bangkok and would be delighted to hear from any classmate who comes thru Thailand, of whom there have been very few during his four years there. He says it would be a special occasion to have a gathering of the Dartmouth Club of Thailand, of which Dave is secretary. DickRepko, who lived in Siam in the late '50s or early '6os, clearly preceded Dave. And Bangkok was on my beat in the middle '6os, but don't know if the local Dartmouth Club even existed then. Sorry we missed you, Dave.

Woody De Yoe considerably brightened my day recently with a good note. Woody practices law with three partners in Paterson, N.J., but the De Yoe family lives in nearby Ridgewood. Both sons are at college (Chip at Fairleigh Dickinson, Greg at Franklin Pierce), and the two daughters are still in high school. Woody noted that he skied Hunter Mountain in the New York Catskills on November 23 this past fall, the earliest in any year the entire mountain has been open. Not bad for the Catskills, he said, but pointed out the surprising fact that Hunter is almost as high as Vermont's Mount Mansfield (4393 feet).

John Van Raalte sent along word that appeared in December's news media concerning an outstanding accomplishment on a national scale by a '48. Dave Meeker, president of the Hobart Corporation in Ohio, has become chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers, an association with a membership of 12,000 firms! This, as John confirms, is quite an honor for Dave, and our class should certainly be proud of him. Heartiest congratulations to you, Dave, from your fellow '48s.

Two very sad notes were the passing of popular '48 Brad Winans (see elsewhere in this issue) and the death of Larry Kepnes' beloved wife, Janet, both in April last year. The Class' deep feelings go out to Brad's widow Peggy and their four children. We equally sympathize with and support Larry whose loss will be especially felt at future '48 Reunions where Janet's pop- ularity with the other wives will be missed. All for now. Remember to save fuel.

There are methods of penetrating the veil of innate modesty which surrounds class secretaries, including conspiracy with their relatives and sometimes even with their secretaries. Therefore it can be announced here with some assurance but no aid from Class Secretary Rem Drury that he has been promoted to vice president of Gulf Oil Company-Latin America. As regional manager of Gulf Oil Trading Company, Rem travels a lot, as his readers are well aware.
