These notes are begun on the first of September, the day when Hurricane Elena completed its several days of wanderings in the Gulf of Mexico and down and up the west coast of Florida to the point where its eye finally went ashore over Mississippi. It may be of interest to the classmates to know that 11 '48s live within a 125-mile stretch of Florida's west coast, an area that saw huge waves, high tide, deluging rain, and tremendous wind gusts over a three-day period without actually seeing the eye of the blast that was Elena. Our group includes the families of Warren "Mouse" Taylor in Clearwater, Scane Bowler and Joe Marple in Largo, Howie Hilton and Dave Kadyk in Tampa, Dick Brendenberg and Joe Logan in St. Pete, Bill Wright in Bradenton, Tom Crook in Sarasota, Ken Young in Fort Myers, and Roy Wilson in Cape Coral.
Members of the class will wish to send their best wishes to Mouse and Rose Mary as they lost their youngest son, 26- year-old Gregory, as the result of a devastating fall during the maelstrom kicked up by Elena. Mouse would like to hear from any of his old friends who may wish to phone him in Clearwater.
Dave Kadyk reported that no damage occurred to his place, some 20 miles, inland, except for a few tree branches. He and Bev simply stayed put through the storm. Dave says he's completely recovered from his second open-heart operation of November last year when a valve was repaired and a triple bypass performed. Says he's playing tennis again and is once more on his feet before judge and jury in Tampa courts.
Joe and Barbara Logan moved to St. Pete three years ago after having spent Joe's full working life after Dartmouth with a container manufacturing concern in western Massachusetts at Agawam. In order to keep busy after retirement Joe became security officer at the Bayfront Medical Hospital in St. Pete, located only a few minutes from St. Pete Beach. When Elena was at its height at 2:00 a.m. Joe helped organize and carry out the movement of a great number of old, sick, and helpless people from the flooding beach area to the hospital. Joe says there were no casualties, his career in the USMC having helped. Joe would like to hear from other '48s in his area and sends regards to old buddies such as GeorgeMacGillvray. He hasn't seen other '48s at the local Dartmouth Club luncheons he has attended, but hopes to do so.
It is unusual to find so many '48s living in such a small area as the subject stretch of Florida, all within AT&T's 813 area code, all probably available via information. Perhaps they'll get together at a local Dartmouth Club.luncheon in St. Pete or Sarasota.
Another area that has always attracted a significant number of '48s as a place to live is the state of Colorado, perhaps at least partially due to its location, as it encompasses the highest ranges of the Rockies and has easy access to great outdoor mountain life. Bill Malone has been an attorney in Denver's Mile High Center for many years and says he still enjoys the life provided by Colorado and nearby Wyoming, where he and family own a place more than 20 miles from the nearest road. We mentioned retired USGS geologist Jack Murphy last month, who now is a volunteer with the Society of Economic Geologists in Denver. Colin Stewart has lived his life mostly in Colorado since grad school in architecture. Recently he and Edna moved to Vail where he can be found on Beaver Dam Road, probably still as fine a skier as ever. Dr. Tom Huffman and Beth live in the town of Longmont, north of Boulder and almost in the shadow cast eastward by Long's Peak late in the afternoon. One of Tom's specialties is cardiology. Our class's great producer of grand opera, MET director Nat Merrill, is now in Denver with spouse Louise and can be found at Opera Colorado at the Boettcher Concert Hall where Nat undoubtedly has a fine series of highly creative productions underway.
Bob Jeavons, a newcomer with wife Coke to Denver not so many years ago, was recently reelected national treasurer of the Arthritic Foundation. Bob has been a volunteer with the foundation for more than 15 years and has himself had painful rheumatoid arthritis for almost 10 years. Lan Macartney was a member of Colorado's Big Green contingent but passed away in Denver almost two years ago. Wife Carla and offspring, however, still carry forward there. Dartmouth in Colorado has been a tradition for many years.
By the time this is read, we should know whether Coach Joe Yukica has managed to bring forth a winner in this year's chapter of Dartmouth football. Hopefully the hills east of Hanover, Velvet Rocks, and Balch Hill, are ringing with echoes from enthusiastic cheers out of our own little Memorial Field.
