A few words about a very impressive and most interesting ceremony at the Old North Church in Boston celebrating the beginning of the Revolution and Paul Revere's famous ride. President Ford and Senator Brooke were present and spoke briefly. The President called for a renewal of great ideals and Senator Brooke read a Scripture lesson. The keynote of the service was the lighting of a third lantern. The Reverend Colledge, vicar of the church, said, "The steeple of the Old North Church will shine with a third lantern tonight, a new signal that will call all of us to renewed hope in our third century."
A letter from Ed Sides expressing concern about the missing notes of '13 in the March issue: He didn't know why but if it was because there was no news (he guessed right) he was going to change the situation. On the night of February 12 the Sides were presented two brand new great-granddaughters and within hours of each other. The first was born in New York City to granddaughter Martha Lothrup (husband Peter is a graduate of Duke) and has been named Marjorie. The second was born in Pittsfield, Mass., to grandson Tom (Bowdoin '68) and wife Caroline and was named Brooke. This makes seven great-grandchildren. Zero population? No way, says Ed. Congratulations from us all and more power to you both. Ed says that they are both fighting the customary old age troubles - stroke effects, arthritis, cataracts, glaucoma, etc., but they are still around and getting by, with no real complaints.
John Remsen received a card from Ruth GayKing saying they were on the way home after a globe-circling trip. The highlight to date was Kwang Chong (Canton) China; from there they went to Korea and Japan. They experienced temperature changes from the 90s in Thailand to 36 in Japan.
John Stewart Ferris died September 29, 1974 at the age of 83. Hebe, as he was called, was the son of Charles C. and Mary S. Ferris. He was a member of Chi Phi and lived in the Chi Phi House his junior year. According to the latest figure, that leaves 60 of us to carry on. A letter received from Ferris in April of last year revealed that he had had an accident, a fracture of the right hip which hospitalized him for six weeks. At the age of 65 he sold his insurance business and retired from active work. His obituary appears in this issue. The sympathy of the Class goes to his family.
