As we run into late August and early September here in western Pennsylvania, one begins to see those shorter days of autumn's approach, begins to feel the snap in the air at night, and, of course, also sees the hardwoods begin to get spots of color in their leavses as they start their gradual drifting to the ground prior to the winter that must come.

Had an opportunity to talk to Ed Satalia fairly recently. Ed is in the new U.S. Steel building in Pittsburgh and has worked for USS since 1948. He and Margaret have five young Satalias from 12 to 25, and the group has been in Pittsburgh since 1964, having previously been in Cleveland where Ed was with the Steel and Wire Division. He has not run into any '48s in recent years, but can be easily contacted in his high building by any old friends who happen to pass through the Steel City.

John Van Raalte sent along a New YorkTimes clipping about Jim Randolph who this past May terminated ten years as publisher of Business Week to become a group vice-president of McGraw-Hill Publications and part of the executive staff. The clipping states that Jim's new job will have as one of its objectives the increase of his group's annual business revenues from $150 million to $200 million by 1980. No small task, no matter how you measure it for 1948's chief representative in the commercial publishing field.

Plaudits to Paul Liscord who has made his mark in the insurance actuarial profession. Paul joined the Massachusetts Rating Bureau as vice-president and actuary after a career that began, after his graduation in 1948, with the Travelers in Hartford. He then worked with New Hampshire as a fire-casualty actuary and later served as a consultant to the insurance departments of Maine and Vermont. He was subsequently vice president and actuary with Insurance Co. of North America. Paul has had a total of 28 years of experience as a casulaty actuary in property and liability insurance and is one of the ranking officers in leading associations in this industry.

Dick Donahue, president of the Massachusetts Bar Association, will be proud of his classmate and fellow member of the American Bar Association, Mel Neisloss, who has been appointed director of the Corporate Law Department of Olin Corporation, the large manufacturer in Stamford, Conn. Mel has been with Olin since 1960, following a career at Yale Law School and with a New York City law firm. He and the family live in Westport.

Investment analyst Dick Greene, now firmly settled with his family in a newly purchased stone house in Sewickley, a Pittsburgh suburb, reports that Don Gilmore has become a recognized expert in economic theory. Don is active in the field of macroeconomics with General Motors, having previously been with the Federal Reserve in Boston and a member of the Committee for Economic Development of the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York City. He and his wife Trudy live in North Darien.

This writer was very pleased to have a chance to talk to Walt Cairns in June. Walt and Mary Lane and family live in Marblehead, Mass.; Walt commutes to Cambridge, where he has worked for Arthur D. Little for many years in a welter of interesting assignments. Walt sails on most weekends these days, having successfully completed the arduous task of climbing all 46 peaks of New Hampshire which the 20th edition of the Appalachian Mountain Club's "White Mountain Guide" considers to be more than 4,000 feet high. The family owns a house in Franconia, skiing on winter weekends in such great nearby areas as Cannon Mountain, Wildcat Mountain, North Conway, and other localities which old '48s will remember with much nostalgia.

Am extremely saddened in reporting the passing of Art Kosse and Jack Tracy. Their classmates will remember these two '48s as strong supporters of the College and the Class, as well as being fast friends to those who had the good fortune to know them. More information appears, or will appear elsewhere herein, but we wanted to be sure their old friends don't miss this sad news on Art and Jack.

With the foregoing sad note we look forward to better and fuller news of '48 next month. In the meantime, enjoy a good September/October, and support this year's edition of the Big Green on the gridiron, where Jake's boys are rated as highly possible without the disadvantage of being the most favored.
