By now the pre-, post-, and during-game reunions at Cambridge and New Haven have come and gone, and all thought of football will be submerged in the annual problems of family and Christmas.
Bill Ganter reported the Harvard get-together as smaller than last year. Held again at the Somerset, it included Gil and MarylinSmall, Betty and Bill Lyle, George Porter,Fud Mather, Frank Newman (now teaching at Harvard Law), Frank Brett, and the Ganters. A small contingent of '37s joined the affair, again making it a joint endeavor.
Outside the Bowl before the game I saw no '38s at all, but was lucky at the half to pick up Bud Lynch and Bru Potter in the swirling, slightly stunned Dartmouth crowd. I presume that now things look better for the Green, there will have been a sizeable delegation at Palmer Stadium, and would welcome an account from any reliable witness.
Still on the subject of Harvard, ProfessorBerman's book. The Russians in Focus, has received favorable comment in the HeraldTribune book review section. The only criticism was that, if anything, the treatment of the Soviets is too fair. The reviewer points out that Hal has maintained an excellent balance of accurate reporting of all phases of Soviet life.
It is not the intent of this department to over-emphasize the academic side of life, but the fact remains that of recent date most of the news which has come this way has been of things of an Ivory Tower nature. Just to add to the mass of material, Dr. GeorgeDana has been named Associate Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Dana received his M.D. degree from Cornell University and took his intern work at Cincinnati General Hospital,, entered the Army as a first lieutenant, and served with the Third Army through Europe.
He was appointed assistant director of the Medical Care Clinic of Johns Hopkins in 1949 and director in 1951. Recently Dr. Dana headed a team of research scientists whose work and study of the complications of diabetes may have opened new paths in the treatment of that ailment.
Rev. Roy B. Chamberlin Jr. has been named associate pastor of the Keene Congregational Church; he assumes, his duties in charge of a youth program about November 1. He has been pastor of the Argo, Ill., Con. gregational Church for three years.
A very nice note from Mrs. Jim Hastings reports the recent arrival of Margaret Anne (Peggy) Hastings on October 3. The young hopeful joins three others in the Hasting menage. Father Jim is practicing civil jaw in Chicago and is active in local work, such as the Library Board, Civic Association, coach of a Little League baseball team, and in the P.T.A.
On one of his little cards, Ganter reports Morgan Marshall as now with Brown & Morrell ("B. & M.'") foods. During my recent piigrimage to Greenwich and New Haven,I spent a very pleasant evening with TomChapman and charming wife Eleanor, conversation turning quite naturally the evening before the game on football and not much more.
Charley Silvernail is reported as New England sales representative of the Roosevelt Paper Cos. of Philadelphia. He will reside in Holyoke, Mass. On the political front, HarryHam Jr. is running for ward alderman of the Fourth Ward in Newton, Mass. Harry spent most of the war in the North Atlantic Convoy Service. He takes an active part now in Community Fund and YMCA campaigns and was a leader in the drive for the Newton Wellesley Hospital Building Fund. The Ham family is graced with four children. Rounding up small bits of information from here and there, William N. Clarke is an architectural draftsman resident in Los Altos, Calif. Parker Brownell, whose association with Sea-Trains, Inc., was reported last month, is settled in Riverside, Conn. Carl Hecker is listed as a statistician in Goffstown, N. H. Arthur van Kirk is with Hooper-Holmes of San Francisco.
Dave Berliner from the time of graduation until joining his former firm of Edwin E. Berliner & Cos., was in the advertising business with various. firms as account executive, and then doing merchandising work. He is now treasurer of the Mack Shirt Corp. in Cincinnati. During the war he was C.O. of a minesweeper in the Pacific and found the best part of it "getting out."
Bob Foley, of whom little has been heard of late, is with the Lahey Clinic in Beantown. Service record included Army Medical Corps in England and Italy, during which time pet gripe was "monotony."
From the home of the Bean and the Cod comes an entertaining clipping featuring '38's Dr. John Merrill as a clarinetist in a doctors' variety program at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital for the benefit of the Red Feather Campaign. John is featured in a trio with trombone and trumpet.
John Whelden checks in via the questionnaire route, now a staff writer in publicity, connected with R.P.I, in the not-too-great distance from the secretary's bailiwick. Johnny started off after graduation as a reporter in Springfield and Holyoke, was an ambulance driver during the war, did publicity for N.Y.U. before moving to his present location.
Andy Brown is assistant director of the Community Services Dept. of the UAW-CIO in Detroit. Previously he has held positions as head of the Department of Services to Labor in the Detroit Council of Social Agencies; assistant in the Department of Community Councils of the same council. He has belonged to the Americans for Democratic Action, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and has published pamphlets for UAW-CIO and national CIO. During war service he was a psychiatric social worker in the Army and found the best thing about service "getting out."
After starting a career in law, Tel Mook is noW minister of the First Congregational Church in Oak Park, Ill. Tel got his law degree from Yale, served for four years in the Agricultural Marketing Administration of the Federal Government as a legislative adviser; put in four years of Navy duty as a Japanese language interpreter and education officer in Military Government; returned to law practice with OPA in Des Moines; and finally became a partner in a law firm before entering the ministry. He feels Dartmouth's greatest need is "lower tuition so we can send our boys, there."
A short note from Bob Harvey concluded the mail bag this month, with a poignant plea that we all get behind Bud Walls in his taxing job with the Memorial Fund so that in the 24th year out we won't suddenly find ourselves in a depression. Anyone having bright ideas on the subject should get in touch with Bud, and of course I should be glad to transmit any such suggestions myself.
