Last month I ventured a faint prediction that Dartmouth might have a winner on the gridiron this year, but true to form I relearned my lesson of never trying to predict anything in Ivy League football. I really thought we had the makings of a well-balanced team, but true to form their only consistency has been a startling inability to tightly clasp the pigskin. At the same time, however, I did predict a successful reunion for '46ers during Harvard weekend and here even disaster on the turf did not prove this prediction wrong.
Activities started at 9:30 Saturday morning with a well-attended class executive committee meeting in the Kimball's living room. There was a lively discussion led by our prexy Jack Whitman on many matters relative to class vitality. I can report many active programs in full swing and the easily measured ones involving finances show the Class to be in good shape. Jim Lynch gave a final report on a most successful Alumni Fund effort and believe it or not our treasurer, Don Furber, reported a modest surplus in the class treasury. Yes! We have finally dug our way out of the financial depths created by the 25th reunion and are once again solvent. This latter report broke up the meeting and we all headed out to the backyard to join many other classmates gathering under a colorful reunion tent.
In spite of chill breezes there followed a couple of hours of pleasant conversation, elbow bending, picnicing and entertainment by a four-piece combo with at least 30 classmates, plus wives, offspring and friends. As would be expected, Massachusetts produced the biggest delegation with Carl Peterson, Bill DeStefano, Joe Masters, Ham Bailey, Harvey White, Bob Hooper, Don Furber, Jack Whitman and JimBarnet being in evidence. From further south came Jack Sayers, Jim Lynch, George Carr,Bob Albrecht and Frank Cole. From a more westerly direction came Buol Hinman, MonkMartin and Dune Fitchet. Andy and Betsy Carstensen '44 did us a great favor by joining our group and bringing Rosemary Marlette and family out from Buffalo. I am certain this is a woefully incomplete list, but anyway we had a good group in attendance and a most pleasant time.
Saturday evening most of the above and more moved out to the Pierce's in Etna where we all enjoyed an excellent dinner and a fun evening. Reg imported from Maine a great piano and banjo team, and along with himself at the drums provided a festive atmosphere to liven already high spirits. In the midst of the revelry Bob Kimball and Bob Albrecht rashly decided to challenge all comers to decide the fall reunion class doubles tennis championship. HarveyWhite and your secretary rose to the challenge and not so bright and early Sunday morning thrashed them into respectful subservience. Needless to say, it was a great mini-reunion and I hope even more of you can make it next year.
