Spring came to Hanover pretty much on schedule in early May as did an equally pleasant horde of class officers. '46 was ably represented by our President Jack and Jean Whitman, Don and Margaret Furber, Jack and Beth Ulrich, and Frank and Pat Ettari. We had a pleasant and productive weekend in spite of a spring shower or two. Our leader in his infinite wisdom changed our class officers meeting time and location from 7:45 a.m. at the Inn to 11 p.m. at Kimballs, so our productivity level was naturally at its zenith. From these weighty deliberations came good news of continued sound fiscal strength and enough of a surplus so that we have scheduled another '46 fall, pre-Harvard game, reunion on October 16. There will be a tent, beer, ice, etc. and hopefully lots of returning classmates. So mark your calendar for a trip back to Hanover that weekend.
As would be suspected much of the weekend was spent formally and informally discussing the Trustees' position on future admissions policy. I won't elaborate other than to say I was impressed by the fact that the Trustees really seem to have been "listening" during the last few months and their position, in my opinion, has softened considerably. I get the strong feeling they are now thinking in terms of little or no change in male enrollment with-a gradual increase in females, with a long term goal of 2 to 1 versus the present 3 to 1 ratio. Sex blind admissions is a long way off, if ever, for Dartmouth.
I received the good news not long ago that Jud Hannigan had been appointed an executive vice president of Continental Forest Industries, a world-wide product group of Continental Can Co. to which he has also been made a vice president. I trust this means he and his family can continue to live in Scarsdale, N.Y.
Word has also gotten to me that Attorney Joseph P. Donohue Jr. will be awarded a trustees medal "for outstanding and distinguished service to the University of Lowell." Joe served as chairman of a commission which made a major recommendation for combining of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute.
We received a nice note from Jack and Ada Kellstrand. They are living in Riverside, Calif., and will be celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary in July. Although they only live a few blocks from Disneyland they continue to have an active hobby of providing musical entertainment for dances and private parties around the southern California area. Let's hope they bring their equipment and talents back to Hanover for our 35th.
Word comes from the South that Dr. Edward A. Atex of Hattiesburg, Miss., served the College as an academic delegate at the Inauguration of Aubrey Keith Lucas, president of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
Looking for a good meal while on Cape Cod this summer? My old friend Binny Tower '43 says '46ers are especially welcome at the Bailey Neck Inn in East Orleans. Binny is a not-so-silent partner who promises to provide great Bloody Marys for Sunday brunch.
C. Welles Fendrich Jr. of Princeton was recently elected a director of the New Jersey Research and Development Council, a statewide organization which includes the nation's leading R&D laboratories. Welles is vice president for corporate, development for Research-Cottrell Inc.
Ending on a pleasant note I learned we will be having a truly all-Dartmouth wedding in Hanover next fall. Lowell and Mary TayThomas Jr. of Juneau, Alsaka, recently announced the engagement of their daughter Ann'77 to John Donaghy '75 of Burlington, Vt. Ann is captain of the womens' ski team and John teaches at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H.
Have a great summer and let me know all about it.
Nearly all the '44s resident in North Carolina met at a Duke University program on international science policy given by Dartmouth Vice President Leonard Reiser '44: (L) X.Larrabee, assistant to the president and head of information at the Research TriangleInstitute, Reiser, and Jim White, professor of biochemistry at UNC, Chapel Hill.
