Excitement is building for our 30th Reunion as the number definitely returning continues to climb. According to mid-January word from Ron Wybranowski, 65 classmates have said they are coming back. Another 33 or so are in the maybe category. The classes of 1959 and 1960 each are expecting at least 100 class members, so the total reunion is nearing 300.
"We're doing almost everything together," Ron said. John Goyette '60 is a key figure in bringing in the joint entertainment. John is a former director of the Hopkins Center and of Spirit Square in Charlotte, so he knows how to attract major-league talent.
Our speaker for the class dinner will be Jim Wright, dean of the faculty and professor of history, who will give a close-up view of Dartmouth today. He's an excellent speaker.
Ron is launching a "Call a '61 Campaign," asking each of the 65 classmates who are definitely coming to ask at least one other classmate to come along. I have the phone numbers, if you need them.
Ron also had personal news: after nine years as a consultant, he's become vice president, marketing, for Telekurs (North America) Inc., a company that provides the programs and the data for folks who engage in programmed trading of stocks. He also reported that son Ron '85 had gotten married, to Barbara Whipple '85, an associate director of alumni affairs at the College. The two met on their freshman trip "on the very first day of college." Of die 180 people at the wedding, 80 were Dartmouth.
Another '61 son also is in the news: Charlie Chapman's son Pete will be football captain next year.
Several classmates have been honored by other colleges recently. Ron Heinemann, who has taught American history at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia for 21 years, was awarded the Trustees' Prize for his "superior teaching and acclaimed research." He also was awarded the Squires Professorship in History this fall. Ron has had a new book, on the Depression in Virginia, published by the University of Virginia Press, and has a biography of Harry Byrd in the works.
At the University of Michigan, Richard Bailey, an English professor, received the highest faculty honor given, the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award. "You are a prominent and versatile authority on the English language, whose career models the successful integration of scholarship with public service," the citation says. "By championing the validity of every variety of English used throughout the world, you enhance the public acceptance and self-respect of the people who speak those dialects." The citation lists a string of accomplishments: editor of the journal "Dictionaries" since its inception in 1978, a founder and now director of the English Department's Doctor of Arts curriculum for mid-career teachers, chair of the Washtenaw Community College board of trustees, where he "strongly advocated an open-door policy and special initiatives for low-income and minority students," and chairmanship of the university's Budget Priorities Committee during a period of retrenchment, winning respect for "creative suggestions, sense of fair play, and genuine sympathy for those whose programs were cut."
A final note: Glee Clubbers planning to come to reunion should contact Tom Ruggles '50 (617/369-5879), who is organizing a special concert by ex-Glee Club members of '50-'59-'60-'61 at Thompson Arena on June 11. You'll be singing Dartmouth songs including some we don't hear any more. Sing Along With Glee.
