Council Award for Bixby '23
February 1976

Chet Bixby '23 received the Alumni Council Award at ceremonies last month in Hanover, accompanied by this citation:

"Chesley Tasker Bixby - an unbounded supporter of Dartmouth, an able business leader who fosters both the corporate and public welfare, forthright but gentle and responsive to the needs of others, giving and forgiving - if only research could find a key to the mass production of men like you.

"Always you have had a compelling desire to travel and meet people. You wondered what the Sahara looked like and what the Tibetans had for tea. As a youngster you began your travels by selling farm products house-to-house in Haverhill. Then you worked your way across the Atlantic on a cattle boat and bicycled around Europe. Later you put a girdle round about the earth and came to know camel drivers in the desert and houseboatmen in Kashmir. When the news of this award reaches Nepal your favorite elephant boy probably will send congratulations....

"Your service to your Class and the College is equally impressive. You were a member of the Alumni Council from 1962 to 1965, on the Executive Committee in 1964, chairman of the Placement Committee in 1963-64, and a member of the Bequest and Capital Giving Committee. You were class secretary for thirteen years and vice president of the Class Secretaries Association in 1961-62. Currently you are an Assistant Class Agent and you have been Class Bequest Co-Chairman since 1969.

"With abiding appreciation for faithfully serving the College, your Class and your community for more than a half-century, we are honored to present to you the Dartmouth Alumni Award."
