Well, Happy Groundhog Day! Let's hope the sun shines warmly on everyone for the rest of this year.
I've received no new news from classmates during the past month. This may be a blessing in disguise. It could mean that everyone has sent their Dartmouth questionnaires in already! Right? Probably wrong! Do make every effort to get your questionnaires in to the College. As I've mentioned before, these will be the foundation for our class directory.
I thought I'd ramble from East Coast to West Coast. I've got a lot of little notes I want to pass along. And, speaking of a lot, listen to what Pete Schreier (49 Salem Church Rd., Newark, Del. 19711) gets involved with. He is the manager of an independent insurance claim adjustment firm. That alone will get him into a lot of trouble. But then he's got four kids - Linda, Eric, Leah and Laura - to watch over. And then he's a Red Cross instructor. And then he's a member of Common Cause ... and of the Sierra Club ... and of a local German social club. Cut it out, Pete, you'll drive yourself into the ground!
But, knowing Dartmouth men, they never have enough to do. Take Haig Kazazian (221 Tunbridge Rd., Baltimore, Md. 21212). As his wife so ably puts it, "he is vitally concerned with and involved in everything that goes on around him in a social, political and family sense." A nice tribute. What is she talking about? Haig is an associate professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he spends much of his time engaged in genetics research. (Don't get too close, Haig. You'll become a mutant.) He is also president of a local Citizens for Good Government, which is something this country really needs not only the good government, but people who are actively concerned. Haig is also an active tennis player. And, on top of all that, Haig thinks that it would be a good idea for the Class to organize some group vacations within the class of alumni. Haig, do you want help to make it happen? Give me a call!
And, when you talk about active and committed, think of Jack Nason (Kleinbard, Bell & Brecker, 1808 Fidelity Bldg., 123 South Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19109). Not only is he committed to the legal system we have in this country (specializing in labor relations), but Jack is constantly involved in Dartmouth work - past president of the Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia; past job placement chairman of the same club; on the current Alumni Council; member of the Committee on Class Organization; and the Committee on Admissions and Enrollments. If you've got any questions about what's going on in the school, Jack's your man. We would like him to be involved in class activities (!), but it would be unfair to ask him. Unless?? ... Jack!!! ...
We've got other presidents of Dartmouth Clubs. Take John Wardrop (99 Morningside Rd., Verona, N.J. 07044), who heads the club in Essex and Morris counties in New Jersey. He also plays golf, tennis and handball. On the side he is the vice president and general manager of Sparks Belting Company.
Then we have people just getting their feet wet again in the U.S.A. Dave Heine (716 Shackamaxon Dr., Westfield, N.J. 07090) recently returned after 11 years in Latin America, the most recent assignment being the director of Johnson & Johnson in Argentina. Seeing what's going on there today, Dave, no wonder you left!! Now Dave is Far East area manager for J&J. Dave is looking for more class activities. Hopefully, he was able to attend some of the tailgates. If you want to help in the fall of '76, give Mike Hurd or Tippy Blake a call.
But, if you want to be in the swing of things, hang around Donn Chickering (185 East 85th St., New York, N.Y. 10028). Now a very eligible East Side bachelor, he lives the life of ... would you believe a miner! After ten years on Wall Street, Donn started a strip mining company in Kentucky. I can hear Donn now telling the young lovely, "Come on, I'll show you how to strip mine." Good luck, Donn.
Dick Masterson (62 Dartmouth St., Rochester, N.Y. 14607), on the other hand, tells better stories, since he is a member of Toastmasters International. Between that and being involved in legal assistance and counseling, I imagine Dick's line ain't bad either!
But then there are those of us who just like to sail through life. And that's exactly what JoeDare (6909 Tordera St., Coral Gables, Fla. 33146) is doing. That's his major hobby. And, he's still a professional student, having just received his law degree from the University of Miami. Starting a legal practice on a sailboat at a yacht club in Key Biscayne. I can see it all now! It beats the hell out of "77 Sunset Strip."
Moving further west and north, we get into auto country, where the Ford Motor Company has the distinct privilege of having Al Hurlbut (659 Wilshire Dr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich. 48013) do their financial analyses in merchandising and dealer development. But probably his most rewarding venture is coaching a bunch of eight year old hockey players. That, coupled with his self-admitted involvement in sailing, beer drinking and "frolicking," makes for a most complete life.
Further out west, Paul Clarkin (3219 Delmar Terr., Pueblo, Colo. 81008) is president of the American Federal Savings and Loan Association as well as the director of the Savings League of Colorado. And he does all of that between skiing trips!
And, another officer in Colorado - KentRickenbaugh (620 South University Blvd., Denver, Colo. 80209) - who happens to be the vice president and general manager of Rickenbaugh Cadillac Company, has just been elected to the board of directors of the South Colorado National Bank. Kent is also chairman of the St. Joseph Hospital executive committee and a trustee of the Denver Zoological Foundation. Congratulations, Kent, in and on all of your successes.
When it comes to success, however, you have to include Nick Monsour (3064 N. Stoddard Ave., San Bernardino, Calif. 02405), who has been named to the 1973 and 1974 editions of outstanding Educators of America. That's probably because he is chairman of the social studies department of a local high school; an instructor at Valley College; a William Coe Fellow from Stanford; on the board of directors of the San Bernardino Montessori Academy; an advisor to the Junior Statesmen of America; an active Democrat; a member of the California Teachers Association; a member of the National Education Association; and an active supplier of Dartmouth undergraduates for Southern California. Nick, we salute you.
And, speaking of saluting on the West Coast (!), Bob Weston is a lieutenant commander in the Navy, as a naval aviator. But we should really salute Bob for his sometime participation in the San Diego chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.
And, as we hear the final verse of "Sweet Adeline" fading softly into oblivion, we say so long for another month, wishing you and yours ...
