Our esteemed president received more letters and news than your secretary this summer, with epistles from Joanne Chutter, Jean Woolworth and Aline Burnham. Aline's letter gives a very favorable impression of how the College welcomes incoming students. Aline writes, "My doctor's son is going to Dartmouth next year, and he is simply amazed at the thoughtfulness being shown to an enrolling student. 'Does he want to room with a smoker or a nonsmoker? Does he want music in the room?' And the athletic department writes that they would be happy to have him participate in football and rowing."
How things have changed from the days of a "Laycock marriage," where your roommate was picked from the long list of freshmen and it was "for better or for worse" all that first year.
Eva (Mrs. Edward L.) Kiley sends from Box 1623, Ormond Beach, Fla. 32074, news that must have placed her on cloud nine. Her son Jim '53 has moved his office to Florida from Michigan, and she has resolved to enter her grandson at his second birthday in Dartmouth's Class of 1997. She further reports that Florida's fountain of youth keeps her in excellent health with seldom a pain or an ache.
Roger Evans calls attention to the picture of a house at the top of page 77 in the September ALUMNI MAGAZINE. If you look it up, you will find the place in Hanover where '16ers gathered on those many football weekends. What welcomes awaited one there, what cheery gettogethers, and now what poignant memories of those two grand people, John and Elsie Stearns, whose Downing Road home now must pass to new owners. May it bring the same love and joy to them and their friends as it brought to us those many years.
Sorry to report another 1916 loss. PhilStackpole died September 4. He was the youngest man in the Class and had his 80th birthday this year, which means that he was just 16 when he transferred from Berea. Our sympathy goes to his wife Sally and his son Robert. A memorial to Phil will appear in this or a coming issue. Sally can now be reached at her new address, 801 North Broad St., Apt 6 F, Elizabeth, N.J. 07208.
From Concord, N.H., came a letter telling of the passing of our Dr. Charles Parson's widowMargaret.
The faithful gathered in June: 65th reunion portrait of Dartmouth's stalwart Class of 1912.
