There must be magic in the number seven because when a call for news asking, "Do you use a cane?" went out, answers came from seven '16ers - Hugo Gumbart, Dave Shumway, Mildred Cranston (widow of Earl), Fletch Andrews, Ev Parker, Chan White, and Marion Barr (widow of Oliver). Thus was started the "Cane Club of 1916."
During the rest of 1980, calls for membership came from Arthur Emery, Roy Burkhardt, Dick Parkhurst, Dan Lindsley, May Tucker (widow of Ken), and Ruth Fuller (widow of Gran). In 1981, the following added their names to the Club: Ed McFalls, Mary Ross (widow of Ken), George Paine, Alice Biel (wife of Bill), and Mary Martha McClary (widow of Andrew). In 1982 thus far, the number of members has reached 21 with the addition of Mary Buffington (wife of Howard), Jim Shanahan, and Ethel Campbell (widow of Les).
From a copy of the annual Leavitt family letter that came to your secretary, I learned that Les and Margaret Leavitt are the founders of a family whose children spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren now number 28.
A letter from Ed McFalls mentioned a luncheon he had with Stirling Wilson in Washington years ago. Stirling was about to relate his experience on the Ford Peace Ship when he was called away. Do any of you know the full story of the Stirling Wilson-Ford Peace Ship adventure as Stirling related it? Write me.
