Phil O’Connell, working out of Glen Ridge, N.J., continues to play a lot of golf and this past summer twice had 74’s, to match his number of years. He had an eight handicap this season. Five of his ten grandsons are now in college but none in Dartmouth. He has hopes, however, for Sean Breen, 15 years old, six feet and 190 pounds. Sean is a student as well as a fullback and a swimmer and has appeared in two national scholastic meets in the pool in Hanover in the last two years.
Bob Cubbins maintains a pleasant retirement in Tequesta, Fla., where he sometimes sees classmate John Hamilton, who also lives there. Bob keeps busy with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Rotary, church activities and friends. He sur- vived a total left hip replacement at the begin- ning of the year and another operation in May, so this fall he and Baba were thinking about traveling.
Paul and Alice Pearson have done some journeying to far places from West Roxbury, Mass. In the fall of last year they visited Por- tugal, Tangier, and Spain (the cities of Seville, Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, and Madrid). This summer they went west to California and New Mexico, stopping also in Boulder, Colo., to see their daughter, a Mt. Holyoke ’53 graduate, and her family.
More travel notes: Pete Haffenreffer writes that he and Ginie took an Adriatic-Aegean cruise in September that was a great success. “It was one of the Swan Tours under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History and was very educational: in fact, I think I now qualify for my master’s in archaeology after rummaging through the rubble of ancient Greece in Turkey, on the Greek islands, and in Athens.”
Bud and Sally Petrequin had a fall trip scheduled on Alumni Flights Abroad to India, Nepal, and Iran (all new countries for them), with stops in London going and in Amsterdam returning.
And Harry Clarke sent a colorful postcard greeting from London but disclosed no details of the journey.
Bob Myers, the southern California enthusiast, made an early summer trip east, “where I saw two granddaughters graduate from high school, one in McLean, Va., with scholastic honors and the other from Upper Moreland High School in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., with best-athlete-of-the-year honors. Also celebrated Fathers’ Day and my 75th birthday with both children’s families at the home of Bud Jr. ’5O in Huntingdon Valley. Got as close to Hanover as Lake George, where I visited my sister. A great vacation of four weeks, but I was glad to get back to San Diego.”
Ralph Tucker also loves his retirement area, but it is in the east Tryon, N.C. Ralph says he has an occasional game of bridge with CharlieDodd but that Dick Heydt has reportedly sold his house there. And he had a card from Italy from Chuck and Sally MacMillan.
And Chuck does not say anything about Italy in his note but goes back to June of 1976 when his son Rick ’66 married a sister of Tom Clarke ’66. The wedding was in East Dennis, Mass., on the Cape and was almost a Dartmouth event with about 20 on hand, including Dick Holden and Ralph Tucker and wives Margaret and Ruth. Chuck says he and Sally are still thrilled with this happy event.
Bob and Connie Pierce celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 21. The sympathy of all classmates goes to Deak Blodgett, whose wife “Big” passed away in her sleep peacefully early in the morning of October 14 at their home in Upper Montclair, N.J. Various complications became too much for her after two heart attacks. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.
