On January 14 Cort and Marian Horr phoned us, and we made a date to meet two days later at the gathering to welcome Jake Crouthamel on his annual visit to southwest Chicago. The affair was held at the Holiday Inn of Willowbrook. It was the coldest day of the year, 17 below, but we gave it the old college try, and sure enough Cort and Marian were there to welcome us. After the rally, we four had dinner together. Cort had already informed us of Al Gottschaldt's hip accident in Phoenix, where he was visiting his daughter Helen. He fell and fractured the ball and socket joint. His grandson Phillip Pratt '69 writes, "His condition is described by his physician as 'guarded,' and he is currently suffering considerable pain. Since he will undoubtedly require prolonged hospitalization and likely continued professional care, I am certain that he would greatly appreciate messages from his classmates and friends to help him through this very difficult period of his life." The address through which Al may be reached is c/o Mr. Kent P. Christie, 6838 N. Fourth Place, Phoenix, Ariz. 85012.
To get back to the football rally for a minute. Jake did a wonderful job of selling Dartmouth. He is a public relations man par excellence as well as a darn good coach.
George Stoddard, football reunion chairman, checks in with the following, "For the past several years we have arranged to join with 1919 for pre-game cocktails and luncheon in the Drake Room or Tavern and with 1917 for post-game cocktails and dinner in the Drake Room. A highlight of the evening has been Arch Earle 17 at the piano and the resulting songfest and dancing.
"These get-togethers with our contemporaries have been most enjoyable. All arrangements have been made to repeat the routine on September 24.
"Please plan to join the group at this colorful time and place, and mark your calendar accordingly. Miss Florence Carey at the Inn is reserving a number of rooms for 1918 for September 23 and 24, and you should write her for desired space just as soon as you can make plans.
"Subsequent reminders will reach you from time to time, but plan now to attend this only gathering of '18ers before our 60th reunion in June 1978!!!"
George also says that he and Pat are trying to get away to the sun country, Death Valley and Arizona, for March and April. Can't fault you on that, George.
Dwight Sargent says Peg is recovering from her broken hip very well. They seem to be getting a bit stir-crazy from the confinement, made worse by the awful weather.
Sig Judd called me and 'low'd as how he might write a couple of letters to scare up a few more classmates for the 60th. He even admitted that he and Dorothy might take in the post-50-year reunion this June.
