Another first, surely, for friendly old '44. Three fathers of '44s are currently presidents of their classes: Warren Kimball's father, Wee Kimball, is president of the Class of '11; DaleSisson's father, Rufus Sisson, is president of the Class of '14; and George Dyke's father, George Dyke, is president of the Class of '15. So run that up your flagpole and smoke it.
On the other end of the stick, we are pleased to acknowledge what we believe is the newest fatherhood feat in the Class: surgeon JackSchultz, a bachelor until 1974, married Candace Muller in September of that year, and the couple produced John in July 1975 and Amy in October 1976. I don't think any of us can top that. Candace was a surgical technician in St. Joseph's Hospital Medical Center, Patterson, N.H., where Jack performs his knifely duties.
Speaking of the Class of '14, as we were, and '44 fathers, the Frederic A. Davidson '14 Pottery Workshop was dedicated at Dartmouth January 25. Frederic Davidson, of course, was the father of Don Davidson, Seattle lawyer. Last summer Don and wife Tatiana took a seven-week trip around the world; this coming summer they'll just make it to Europe, concentrating on Paris, where daughter Lisa is a student at the Sorbonne.
The other half of the '44 Davidsons, Harry"the Rock" Davidson, by name, is still running his own real estate corporation in Dallas, and still paying college bills for two of his five sons. The oldest boy, Jim, is about to get married, the youngest, Scott, is still in high school, and inbetween are Hil, Billy and Jeff. Both the Rock's and wife Dottie's mothers died this past fall and that meant a lot of travel to Florida and White Plains.
Our man in policies, annuities, premiums, that sort of thing, Ben Jones, president of the Monarch Life Insurance Co. in Springfield, Mass., has picked up yet another directorship. He has been elected to the board of directors of the Health Insurance Association of America, the leading trade organization in the health insurance industry. The release didn't say it, but Ben delivered a major address at the association's convention in Chicago and he just may have been made a director in lieu of a speaker's fee.
Another electee is our Zenith man, GeneKinney, who has been named president of the executive board of the Chicago Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Gene served as v.p. of finance of the Council last year when it raised almost two million dollars for scouting in the Chicago area. He has been especially active in the sea scout exploring program, where he holds the rank of vice commodore, thank you.
Nice talks with Dan Donahue and RalphBogan out there in Chicago, the jist of which: Their Atlanta/LaSalle Corporation partnership is still going strong (Roy Alworth, up in Duluth, is also a partner). They're involved in real estate, investments, wholesale sporting goods, and, more recently, the acquisition of the National Security Bank of Chicago. They owned the Atlanta Braves for three and a half years, but sold it last year ("Do miss those spring training trips to Florida," said Dan).
Ralph said he was learning to fly at nearby Glenview, loves his golf, and he is still into skiing as much as ever. He gave up on no-snow Vail for the Canadian Rockies, whereby helicopters drop you off on a peak and you ski down mile after mile through virgin snow six feet deep. Some of the descents are a little hairy, said Ralph, and one of the trails is appropriately named Holy Shit.
The Chicago gang says it sees Fahnestock & Co. stockbroker Fritz Mills often; and a drive by the local racquet ball emporium is likely to reveal Tommy Douglas in the midst of a lob. Tom's ITE Imperial Corp. recently merged with Gould Co. (electronics, batteries, auto parts) and word has it that the old halfback is now manager of the hydraulic fittings division.
Apparently Don Pfeifle is still logging some winter snow time in Kingfield, Maine. He kindly sent me a copy of the Sugarloaf Area Association newsletter.
Nice to have hotel connoisseur George Cummings stop in, with Hap Bush in tow (Hap Bush in tow?), looking for to buy a New England inn. Bonnie Oaks is one of those on the list.
Nice, too, to go to a Dartmouth-Boston College hockey game and watch Snook Hughes' son Dennis '79 score for the Green and Jack Riley's Rob score for B.C. B.C. won.
Very nice to go to a press conference and sit next to Bill Fead's Kelly '78, who is executive editor of The Dartmouth.
And not nice at all to get the word that Shih Yueh Wang died of a heart attack December 31, 1976 in Hong Kong. An obituary will appear in a subsequent issue.
