In what way have we been so wicked as to be treated so shamefully with this winter's weather by the immortal gods of Olympus? Jove as king of the gods and heavens is probably the initiator. Did not he himself bring a few claps of his favorite thunder and some streaks of his lightning even in the midst of winter snowstorms? Did he not also order the north wind Aquilo to send blasts of Arctic air over the northern parts of the land? Along with that came snow and frozen rains in such abundance as have not been seen before. The south and southeast winds of Eurus forced the Atlantic Ocean to pound the eastern shores of the country with huge waves and toppling winds of destruction. Even that usually soft and kindly west wind Zephyrus obeyed Jove's command and made the Pacific Ocean dash its waters onto the western states, felled trees inland, and blew heaps of snow across the Midwest. The southern states also suffered much. The war god Mars was con- spicuously absent from our country, but he is trying his best to stir up trouble in other parts of the world, hoping to involve us if possible. There is a chance, however, that the wise goddess Minerva will find solutions to our many problems.
In spite of all this, folks, do cheer up! Soon the lovely Diana will come tripping down from Olympus in her flowing garments with her hair streaming about her. She will bring buds, leaves, and blossoms to the trees, shrubs, and plants as she moves blithely along over the country. Then, too, her twin brother, the god of the sun Apollo will accompany her to give warmth and grace to our lands. Let us raise a joyous welcome to Diana and Apollo!
A note of sadness and of loss must be inserted here. On February 23 our great friend and classmate Duke Howe passed away after nearly two years of intense suffering and a determined struggle against terminal cancer. The sympathy and affection of the Class go out with all our hearts to his dear wife Dorothy, his children, and his grandchildren. More about this in the obituary column.
