Class members will be saddened by the death of John Meek, retired vice president of the College, on March 2 in Aspen, Colo. John suffered a heart attack while skiing there. For more details, see the obituary section in this issue.
Bob Fox, who does such a good job as the 1933 newsletter editor in reporting on individual news items, seldom fills us in on plans and activities for himself and Babe. His letter to me dated January 25 says, "Babe and I have our reservations for March 15 to Tampa, Fla., where we'll rent a car and spend a few days in Sarasota, where my brother, Dick, lives. Then, if all goes well, we'll head for Pompano to visit Babe's sister, leaving there on March 29. In between, we will try to work out a stop somewhere south of Sarasota .and from there to give you a call; this will depend on finding a motel, as at the moment we have made reservations only in Sarasota, where we have to touch base with many old friends, among whom are the couple from whom Sam Cunningham bought his house on Siesta Key."
In a recent letter Bill MacCarty brings encouraging news regarding the mini-reunion scheduled as a three-day affair September 22-24, 1978, in Quechee Lakes, Vt. He reports,
"We have' 19 yes and 26 not sure. I have heard of several others who are planning to attend, but as yet have not had it in writing. I feel we will have enough with wives and guests to make a go of it by the deadline in mid-May."
This promises to be a superweekend, thanks to the planning and efforts of Bill Dewey and Bill MacCarty, but what is needed most of all at this time is written confirmation that you and your wife and possibly friends are planning to be with us. If you have any qualms regarding the housing expenses, may I again suggest that you make arrangements with some of your friends in the Class, either as roommates, fraternity brothers, or co-members of senior societies or athletic teams, to share the facilities of a condominium or vacation home at Quechee Lakes, where "the indoor pool, lounge, squash courts, health room, saunas and tennis courts will be available free of charge to all those attending." You might also want to check the lists below of those who have confirmed and those who are unsure.
Those now planning to attend are: Bob Fairbank, Bill Lewis, Bill Hitchcock, Hank Smith, Mel Katz, Al Florin, Bill Dewey, Mannie Sprague, Walt Douglas, Page Worthington, Sam Black, Ev Shineman, Bob Mitchell, Chet Thomson, Bob Niebling, Wood Foster, George Drowne, and Bill MacCarty.
In addition, there are the following, who are not sure at present: Wes Beattie, Bill Quinn, Lup White, Charlie True, Horace Shaw, Gerry Krosnick, Al Allen, John Thompson, Howie Schuemann, Dave Flynn, Marty Kerwin, Mel Wor then, Dave Russell, Frank Hardy, Don D'Arcy, Bud Snead, Norm Erlandson, John Paull, Jim De Haven, George Rideout, Ned Lord, Stan Whitman, Bob Fox, John Monagan, Bob Cox and Sid Stoneman.
Tom and Toni Mann, Hank and Ginnie McKee, and Jean and I represented the Class at the fourth annual dinner meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Southwest Florida, held at the Beach Club Hotel, Naples, Fla., on February 14. A record turnout of over 150, including wives and guests, honored President Kemeny, principal speaker, and his wife. Also present representing the College were Vice President Ad Winship, Dean Strickler of the Medical School, and Virginia Soule, regional director of the Atlanta, Ga., region for the Campaign for Dartmouth.
Remember the 1978 Alumni Fund campaign and be as generous as you can, keeping in mind that all of our annual and reunion giving for the next five years will be credited to the Campaign for Dartmouth.
