This column is the last until September and is my last after six years as your class secretary. It has been a very pleasant and rewarding experience, thanks to the friendliness and help of so many of you who have made it possible nine months of each year to circulate news and activities as class notes. To me it is communicating among the '33ers and relating to the Dartmouth family, for the benefit and pleasure of all.
Special thanks also to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE staff — Editor Dennis Dinan, Associate Editor Mary Ross, and Class Notes and Obituaries Editor ('02-'40) Shelby Grantham, and to the director of alumni records, Nancy Elliott.
By the time you read these notes, the 45th reunion of the Class of 1933 will have been another great class gathering. In retrospect, it is sincerely hoped that those classmates and their families and guests who were in Hanover on June 11-13 enjoyed themselves to the limit, that the renewal of long-term friendships was most satisfying, that the weather was all we had hoped for, and that all of the events and provisions planned by John Rockwell and his reunion committee were enthusiastically received. They deserve the special thanks of each of us, whether or not we attended.
The full report of the reunion will be prepared by the new class secretary and will be published in the September reunion issue, supplemented by the class newsletter.
Publishing deadlines being what they are, this column is being written approximately five weeks before reunion and seven weeks before publication. Based upon the figures available as of April 20, the 1933 reunion giving totals $133,352 from 162 donors, which is 42 donors and $100,607 ahead of our record non-reunion giving in 1978. This is most encouraging, and I am confident that our 45th reunion gift to the College, as announced at the class dinner on June 12, will have exceeded the goal of $250,000. Your generosity is appreciated, and, as you know, all gifts to the Alumni Fund from 1978 through 1982 are credited to the Campaign for Dartmouth.
We can take pride in our relatively favorable Class giving record, but during the next five years we will be able to improve our position and help further to insure the pre-eminence and fiscal health of the College by a special program of giving. It is hoped that for each class member and alumnus there will be a continued increase in contributions to the Alumni Fund, significant gifts to the reunion giving programs, and consideration of an extra capital gift during the five-year period. This will go a long way toward the $160-million goal for endowment and other critical needs. As David McLaughlin, who chairs the Board of Trustees, has said, "Just as we were the beneficiaries of the generosity of our forebears, we now have the opportunity to invest in Dartmouth men and women of tomorrow."
Watch for the reunion report in September - and I wish to extend my very best wishes to each of you for the years ahead.
