JUNE 1978 ARTHUR G. WINSHIP

The month of April brought two more losses to the ranks of surviving members of the Class. Alfred Nutt died on April 9 and Benjamin Livingston on April 18. This reduces the number of living classmates to 23. See the obituary section in this or a later issue.

Through the courtesy of R. A. Wesselman '27 we received a recent clipping from a Florida paper which reads as follows: "Judge DonaldCheney has been forced to cancel appearances he scheduled on behalf of the Orange County Historical Museum. He has been confined to his home recently by doctors who want him to take things easy for a while. The doctors have a job ahead of them. Judge Cheney isn't one who cottons to confinement. He is an extremely active octogenarian." Take it easy, Don, and the best of luck!

In a recent birthday card to Ken Clark it was pointed out that his continued pursuit of an active career makes him comparable to "Ole Man River," who just keeps "rolling along." In reply Ken contends that the Ole Man has never been identified, to his knowledge, and he denies any resemblance to the character, who must have been all wet. Speaking of birthdays, please be advised that Clarence Holden, HartfordLeonard, and Charles Jordan will become non ogenarians in the upcoming months of May, July, and August, respectively. Carl Hope attained that status a year ago.

Our head agent True Dudley attended the Class Officers Weekend in Hanover April 28-30, but there was not time enough to get a report from him for the June class notes, inasmuch as the deadline for the notes was May 1. The June issue is the last one to include our class notes until October - hence this interim report on the 1911 Alumni Fund.

The 1911 Alumni Fund is off to a good start this year as part of the CFD program (Campaign For Dartmouth). This is due to the fact that several men have made substantial increases in their donations, and memorial gifts from widows and relatives have been received much earlier than usual. For the period ending April 21, 1978, 10 men and 48 memorial gifts have produced a total of $3,589, as compared with $1,351 for the corresponding period last year. There are 13 more men to be heard from, and the list of widows runs to over 70. The CFD objective is $160 million over a five-year period, which includes an Alumni Fund total of $26 million, averaging $5,200,000 a year - about 15 per cent above any previously specified goal.

Help Wanted by Ken Clark

Information is urgently requested as to those among our 23 remaining classmates and the fine widows of other extraordinary 1911 classmates of happy memory who are able and willing, or whose elbows may be twisted gently, into supporting the Dartmouth College Campaign to raise $160,000,000. Purpose is to help it protect itself against the vagaries of taxes, inflation, and politics, present and future.

Before responding to this call to arms, consider ider the priority of the Alumni Fund and the impact upon your own financial security of the aforementioned forces over which we have little control.

This advertisement has been paid for by your coordinator, who lacks the time and talent for individual confrontation, as well as that irresistible something called clout.

In concluding our notes for the current academic year, we extend our best wishes to all for an enjoyable summer recess.
