We had beautiful, sparkling weather for the Class Officers Weekend at the end of April, where much of the discussion centered on the $l60-million Campaign for Dartmouth. (Already, $34 million has been pledged.) Highlight of the joint meeting for all class officers was John Kemeny's talk in which he cited examples of what the Dartmouth experience had meant to 13 individual students. What each had accomplished made us all proud of the outstanding men and women who are graduating from Dartmouth this month. I am echoing the words of Prexy Frank Hutchins, who was very much present with his wife Jeanne. Also present were John and Marylee Osborn, Moose Rowan,Steve Hull, Frank Edmands, our residence team of Cliff and Betty Jordan and George and BetsyBarr, and your secretary and his wife Pat. At the class secretaries meeting I was hoping to pick up some ideas on how to improve this column by getting additional numbers of classmates to send me news of themselves. One of the class secretaries there said that he used his class notes to raise this very question from time to time! How about it, fellows and gals?

A very meaningful part of that weekend was the memorial service for our former dean, listed on the program as "A service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Lloyd K. Neidlinger, Dean of the College: 1934-1952." The service was very ably led by our classmate Fred Berthold. I was also quite touched by a letter to '45s, dated April 25, from another beloved classmate, Harry Hampton.

The well-known Venezuelan businessman John P. Phelps, Jr. has been appointed president of the Venezuelan Development Corporation by order of President Carlos Andres Perez. He will be replacing John Raphael, who had been acting president of the state corporation, designed to promote industrial investments. John is currently a director of the Venezuelan Investment Fund, Mavesa, C.A., Sindicato Phelps, the Caracas Chamber of Commerce, Torre Phelps C.A., Seguros La Seguridad, and is a former director of the Banco Central de Venezuela and a former vice president of Fedecamaras, among numerous other important posts.

Don Cole forwarded a page from the April 3 issue of Medical World News with an article on Secretary of HEW, Joseph Califano, which states that in reaching decisions affecting HEW health policy, physicians such as Dr. James F.Dickson 111 are important to Califano. For several months, Dickson was the acting secretary for health. He remains high in the secretary's esteem and is brought into his office for high-level planning sessions. Let's give a rouse for Jim!

The Dartmouth has a recent article on the fate of Hal's Restaurant's space, empty since last June. Leland Stacy, manager of the Albert J. Young real estate office, said he was "delighted" with their move from the office's former location above Hanover Needlecraft to the ground-floor Nugget Alley location, and has already detected a response of walk-in. clientele. (Probably some of us old goats who are seeking retirement homes on the Hanover plain.)

Early in June, Steve Hull met with Moe Frye (30th reunion chairman) and your secretary (30th assistant treasurer) to start making specific plans for our 35th. We had a good session, and Steve brought us up-to-date on the number of $1O.OO deposits he has received already for our 35th. If you haven't sent yours in by now, please do not hesitate any longer. If you've misplaced his address, send it to me and I will forward it pronto. Meanwhile, more urgently, don't forget to send your Alumni Fund commitment to John Leggat. End of sermon.
