• Complex Systems: A master's degree program in computer and information science and an undergraduate program in women's studies have been approved by the faculty. The master's degree involves design and management Of complex information systems and the social issues surrounding their use. The program in women's studies involves courses in humanities, social sciences, and sciences, and students may undertake it in addition to a regular major or as part of a modified major.

• Complex Questions: The faculty postponed a decision on whether to make the Black Studies Program a permanent part of the curriculum. A study committee said that it still sought answers to "many interesting and complex questions."

• Logical Project: Operation Cork, with Kroc Foundation funds, has given the Medical School a "major grant" to integrate the study of alcohol and alcoholism into its curriculum. The sponsor says that medical schools historically have given the problem of alcoholism "little time and attention." According to the dean of the Medical School, Dr. James Strickler '50, "Our unusual situation in a rural area where alcohol and alcohol misuse are very prevalent makes this a logical project for us to undertake."

• Designate: Alfred Quirk '49 has been appointed Director-designate of Admissions. Next June, he will succeed Edward Chamberlain '36, with whom he has worked since 1963.

• Journal: Sydney Lea and Jay Parini of the English Department are founders of New England Review, a new national literary quarterly to make its debut with a fall issue that will include a Nobel Prize winner and "the best living Irish poet."

• Good Sport: The board and the sports editors of The Dartmouth have awarded the 1978 Dartmouth Cup to Lea Boiling as "the senior who off and on the field reflects the greatest credit to the College." Credited with much of the responsibility for forming the women's ice hockey club, Boiling has been captain of lacrosse and both field and ice hockey and was named all-Ivy in the last of the three.
