"What's the Green for?" we wondered when we first saw that a person could no longer walk, toss a football, or fly a kite on half of it because the north end had been roped off. When we noticed that the Senior Fence had been taken down, we began to worry. What happened, we discovered, is that the Baker Library end of the Green has been renovated, a project which required four to six inches of new topsoil, reseeding, the repositioning of catchbasins, and $10,000.
Despite the concerns of fraternity chariot racers, intramural athletes, and Outing Club woodsmen, who all hold competitions there, the north section will remain off limits until Commencement in June. When the ropes come down, an attempt will be made to limit use of the area. Intercollegiate teams will no longer be able to hold spring training sessions there, and intramural events will be rotated back and forth from the south half, which was renovated last year. The bonfire is still safe, although spectators will be told to keep off the new grass. The fence, we're happy to report, is back in place. It was temporarily removed so that the west side of the Green could be brought up to the level of a new sidewalk constructed by the town.
