The second year of the Campaign for Dartmouth was exciting and exhilarating, bringing the College new strength on many fronts and providing added confidence that the five year $160,000,000 goal will be met.

On behalf of the Trustees, I am privileged to report that Campaign gifts and pledges totalled over $77 million as of June 31, 1979, 48% of the goal in two years.

Among the many highlights of the year were the unprecedented $5 million gift from Charles Collis '37, the spectacular growth of the Alumni Fund to $6.3 million, at a national high 62.2% participation rate, and the continued strength of the Bequest Program, which raised $8.9 million. The Class of 1954 became the second million dollar reunion class, producing $1,054,000, of which $754,000 was allocated to the Alumni Fund and $300,000 to Campaign endowment.

This report summarizes the Alumni Fund and Bequest Program results for the year, and reflects the vitality and strength of the College's support as it moves into the second half of the Campaign for Dartmouth.

Norman E. McCulloch, Jr. '50 Chairman Trustees Committee on Alumni and Public Affairs

Our Dartmouth Alumni Fund celebrated its 65th anniversary by exceeding $6-million for the first time in history and setting a national alumni participation record of 62.2%! The '79 Fund recorded $6,363,576 from 25,082 donors including 21,468 alumni. The Fund exceeded its $5.8-million goal by 10% and raised one million dollars more than the $5.3-million achieved last year.

Setting the pace for the campaign were the twelve reunion classes who collectively raised half the total — 53,114,00 $3,114,000—with eight of these reunion classes chalking up new records. The Class of 1954, on its 25th anniversary, contributed $1,054,000 in gifts and pledges of which $754,000 was credited directly to the '79 Alumni Fund and the remaining balance allocated to endowment in the Campaign for Dartmouth. Other record classes were 1924, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1958, 1960 and 1974. The Class of 1929, for its 50th Reunion, raised just over $400,000— second only to the 50th year record set by 1926 three years ago.

The Class of 1936 set an all-time non-reunion dollar record with an astounding total of $119,791, while the Class of 1960 became the first class in history to exceed 600 contributors with a record total of 630!

Combined with these alumni achievements was a superb Parents Campaign, ably chaired by Imre Cholnoky, which produced $250,033 from 1,654 parent donors—both new records.

Behind these myriad achievements and heartwarming results is the effective and dedicated service by 4,210 volunteers. Speaking for your Alumni Fund Committee, I sincerely thank each volunteer for this historic accomplishment and I also express profound appreciation to those thousands in the Dartmouth fellowship whose generous support made this the successful campaign ever.

Alumni Fund Endowments

Over several years many individual funds have been established through outright gifts, bequest or life income trust—which provide income annually to the Alumni Fund, credited to the class of the donor. This program has grown rapidly over the past few years and offers an excellent opportunity to perpetuate one's Alumni Fund giving. Unfortunately with space limitations it is not possible to list the individual funds here.

1979Bequest Program

Twenty-Ninth YearReport

Receipts credited to the Dartmouth Bequest and Estate Planning Program reached an all-time high in the year ending June 30, 1979. A grand total of $8,893,325 was received, a significant increase over the previous annual record of $7,598,932 set in 1977-78. Especially noteworthy were two new annual records established in the life income trust category of the program: 107 new trusts were created for the eventual benefit of Dartmouth, and the total of all life income gifts amounted to $4,185,088. This marked the first year in the history of the program that the dollar amount of life income gifts exceeded the total for bequests.

Lifetime and testamentary gifts were received from a total of 257 alumni, wives, widows, faculty, parents and friends of Dartmouth. Their benefactions bring new support for the College's endowment, plant and other long-range financial needs.

The Class of 1924Funding Associates Project

As an integral part of the 55th anniversary of their graduation, members of the Class of 1924 formed a "Funding Associates" project last year, similar to special 55th reunion projects developed by the Classes of 1921 and 1923. The objective was to encourage members of the class and their wives to perpetuate annual contributions to the Alumni Fund beyond their lifetimes through the creation of individual endowment funds, either by lifetime gifts or bequests under their wills. Under the leadership of Harry A. Holmlund and Leon I. Rothschild, a grand total of $3,210,815 was received or pledged over a twelve-month period.
