Peter Kiewit, who chairs the board of Peter Kiewit Sons Company in Omaha, recently wrote an article, "The Way We Work," in the company's periodical for employees. Coming from the leader of one of the country's largest construction enterprises, especially nowadays when some politicians continually blast big business, the article is particularly pertinent. It follows:

"During the past few years, several large corporations have been charged with illegal or unethical business practices at home and abroad. This has raised some question in the minds of many regarding the credibility of businessmen.

"Personally, I have never been able to distinguish any meaningful differences between good business ethics and personal integrity. Early in life, I was impressed with the truth of the saying, 'Honesty is the best policy.' One tangible benefit is that as long as you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said. You never find yourself in an embarrassing situation, and you don't have any conflict-of-interest problems.

"Integrity, however, encompasses far more than truthfulness. The word means 'wholeness.' In mathematics, an integer is a whole number - one that isn't divided into fractions. Similarly, a man of integrity is not divided against himself. He doesn't think one thing and say another; he doesn't believe one thing and do another.

"Integrity gives a person the strength and confidence to take chances; to welcome challenge; to reject the safe, easy way for the uncharted course if there's a chance for improvement. It brings friendship, trust, admiration, and respect from others.

"I am proud of the people who are conducting our business honorably. Our company has worked that way since its inception more than 90 years ago, in spite of occasional provocations and temptations. I am also proud of our company's reputation for willingly and promptly fulfilling our commitments, regardless of whether or not we are closely supervised.

"It is my hope that your efforts will continue to enhance our reputation of being a good company to work for and a good company to do business with."

Peter, if the legendary project of building a rapid transit subway linking Hanover, Lebanon, and White River Junction ever actualizes, '22 well knows the most efficient builder.

When Daniel B. Ruggles '21 and Gordon S. Stanley '21 passed away earlier this year, the 1922 survivors of glorious Company I nostalgically bowed in fond memory of Dan and Red. They and Ort Hicks '21 were our respected sergeants, who drilled 104 Twoters under age 18 and helped us win (?) World War I.

Will the 1979 Dartmouth football team repeat last year's distinction by winning the Ivy championship again? One of the crucial games will be October 27, when Coach Bob Blackman will bring Cornell to Hanover to challenge Coach Joe Yukica and our Dartmouth lads. Dartmouth Night with its renewal of traditional spirit will be the evening before the game. Consequently, in accordance with majority opinion expressed at last year's postgame dinner, '22 will have its Hanover football homecoming that weekend, October 26-27. The Class will have its popular pre-game luncheon beginning about 11:00 on Saturday morning, October 27, in the Drake Room at Hopkins Center. Luncheon reservations are un- necessary. Because of several complications, the Class will not have a prearranged postgame dinner, but the Hanover area now has many attractive eating places, and certainly no Twoters will dine alone. Ike Miller, as usual, has reserved a block of rooms at Howard Johnson's White River Motel. Reservations for two nights, Friday and Saturday, are necessary. So, if you want lodging — and it is hoped many will — call Ike at 802/785-2012 or write Gen. Walter I. Miller, RFD, Box 236, Thetford Center, Vt. 05075.

The 1979 Alumni Fund will soon cross the finish line. If you have not yet participated, the days are fleeting. Delay helps neither you nor the Class nor the College. And remember, every dollar donated goes into the vital Campaign for Dartmouth.

A fine summer to all in the '22 family.
