Autumn 1969. Mother Nature's leafy green mantle is rusting gold. The man-in-the-Harvest-Moon is alive, well, and residing in Houston, Texas. Tanzi's Piece Corps roadtrips no more. Yes, seasons, times, and even class secretaries eventually change. It seems only yesterday that Pete Stern so graciously deposited those 25 pounds of pea green class address cards on my lap and wished me well. I felt just like the guy who inherited a pumpkin patch only to find Hallowe'en had been cancelled. So '63's A to Z, as one of our infamous Comp. Lit. profs used to exclaim, "Excelsior" and let's get on with it.
Speaking of deposits, Bill Russell informed me that we finished second in our group this year in competition for the Green Derby. The Alumni Fund's June 30 deadline was extended, thus permitting the '62's to just ace us out. Nonetheless, a hearty "Well Done" and a round of snaps should again go to Bill and his wife Patty, all class agents, and '69 Alumni Fund contributors for their outstanding support. Wait 'til next year! After all, it only took one year for Steve Francis to be appointed investment officer after joining Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., the commercial banking firm. Steve won his M.B.A. from Stanford Biz and then joined BBH in New York as portfolio manager in the bond department. Nice going, Steve. Ford Hutchinson received his M.B.A. in June from Drexel Institute of Technology. Haven't heard what he's been doing since.
Dave Pabst completed his Foreign Service training program in Washington by successfully passing his final written and oral exams. He was sworn in as a Foreign Service Officer in a ceremony in Washington. Now the class is waiting to hear where your first assignment is, Dave. However, it won't be his first experience at living abroad because he has previously studied at the University of Paris and the University of the Saar.
Bruce Nichols is still on his way up at Bankers Trust Company in New York. He was recently named assistant vice president in the eastern division. He joined the bank shortly after graduation and since 1967 has been an assistant treasurer. He is also an associate member of the treasury division of the Eastern Association of American Railroads and a weekend warrior with the rank of sergeant E-5 in the New York National Guard. He and Penny live in Manhattan.
A few weeks ago, Mike Cardozo and I enjoyed a private screening of Pete Barton's celluloid creations. With a Master's in Drama from Yale and two years in the Peace Corps (the other one) tucked neatly under his belt, Pete made the Great Trek to Fun City and N.Y.U. There, he's presently instructing and producing very fine films. Otto Preminger, take notice! However, Pete currently rates his expensive, low budget undertakings (F) - For Financiers Only. Steve Francis, take notice! Dartmouth's own Dr. Kinsey, Steve Yafa, when not writing movies (Three In The Attic) is writing provocative articles for "Playboy." The September issue contains his second article, a revealing poll concerning student sexploits on five university campi. Next thing you know, one of those bunnies will take a cotton to Steve and he'll end up just like old H. H.
Meanwhile, back in Vermont, Dr. BruceBirch and wife Diane recently added the first branch to their family tree. Laura Wagner Birch, born August 24 in Burlington, Vt. Congrats, Diane and Bru Boy. Well if it isn't babies, it's engagements. And if it isn't engagements, it's weddings. Take Alex Bass, for example. It seems Gwen Brooks, graduate of Bradford Junior and Katty Gibbs, found the right bait for Alex. He's only hooked though, not boated — yet. After serving as a Navy lieutenant, Alex is presently booking at Columbia Business School. Gwen's with McCall's magazine. In June, on the other hand, Ed Emerson's wagon was hitched to a beautiful star. Miss May Starr, a Smith College graduate. Ken Foran, able usher, found his way to Philly to join in the big doings. Ed and May presently reside in Greenfield, Mass. Continuing down the aisle, Jon Lagemann finally took that "one small step for a man." Jon married Ellen Condliff, a Smith College and Columbia Teachers College grad. With four years in the Navy completed, Jon is setting up shop in New York City, where this summer he worked with the law firm of Hughes, Hubbard, and Reed. But whose word is law now, Jon? Russ Koppang also got to the church in Keene, N. H., on time to wed Mary Derring of Akron, Ohio. Another Navy man, Russ received a degree from Keene State College, as did his wife Mary. Here's a switch. Instead of studying and teaching history, Bill Cleveland decided to make a little of his own. On August 16, 1969 Bill married Gretchen Korutz in Bethlehem, Pa. Bill's teaching history at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B. C. Gretchen should soon be receiving her Ph.D. in yup, you guessed it, history from Michigan. Our nuptial novel naturally isn't quite complete unless we have a butler who did it. Okay, Dave Butler, you're on. In June, Dave wed the former Jean Sandness of Chicago. After honeymooning in Ireland, they're back living in Chicago, where Dave's a journalist.
So with football application blanks in hand, it's off to my favorite watering hole, The Dartmouth Club of New York. There, a few quick laps around the pencil sharpener and an internal alcohol rub should set me up for next month's article. Until then, folk.
