Charlie Hathaway, having read in class notes a couple of months ago my mention of having been run into, was kind enough to pen me a letter of sympathy, he having suffered a similar mishap some years ago. "Only our seat belts saved us from injury," Charlie said.

The Hathaways, when Charlie wrote, had just returned to Indianapolis from Florida. He noted that Stearns MacNutt lives in Longboat Key, Fla., "where we have had a condo since 1976. The Hathaways will become Florida residents in 1979. Our home in Carmel, Ind., was sold last October. However, we now have a condo in Indianapolis as a summer home," Charlie reported. (Editor's note, for the uninformed and/or uninitiated — such as the editor: Condo is short for condominium.) Charlie's letter continues, "Condo living is the wave of the future — if you can stand long meetings and exciting elections. It is well summarized in the famous quotation, 'He sold his house and bought a pandemonium.' "

Charlie is bullish on retirement: "Glorious — beyond all description. The feeling of being free-free-free is great. I recommend it to every one." But he is bearish on the world, noting (after a kind word for the class notes), "The world is collapsing around us, and I still seem to find pleasure in reading about my esteemed classmates."

Thanks, Charlie, for a great letter. Please do include Damariscotta in your Maine itinerary.

A recent feature story in the Manchester Union Leader, headlined "Four Attorneys Considered To Be Most Influential," carried biographical sketches of four New Hampshire lawyers, three of them Dartmouth graduates of the late 1930's. One of those is Mac McLane. The article notes, "John R. McLane Jr. was cited, time and again, for his influence on bringing performing arts to Manchester." There followed an impressive listing of Mac's professional and culture-oriented achievements.

I m indebted to the ever-helpful Alumni Records Office for a xeroxed copy of a newspaper article on Bev Smith. As reported in the article, Bev and Ulse moved to Amherst, N.H., from Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., three years ago, following his retirement from a career in insurance, most recently with the Insurance Company of North America. The Bev Smiths have three children.

Appearing elsewhere in this or a subsequent issue of THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE is an obituary of our classmate Fred Sterns.

Although Class Officers Weekend will be long over when these notes appear, it hadn't taken place yet when they were being written and therefore couldn't be reported on. However, there will have been, undoubtedly, much discussion of the general subject (about which you must have read in Boston and New York Papers) of "undergraduate unrest," or campus issues." In this connection, College "Secretary Michael McGean '49 had this to say in the April class secretaries newsletter: "It in be recognized "that the total undergraduate experience is the measure of the College's success or failure, and that the great majority of students here today are finding that experience a positive one indeed."

These are, I believe, Amazing '38's last class notes for the 1978-79 academic year. If you haven't remembered the Alumni Fund yet, please do so before you start your summer.

Have a good one.

A postscript: After the official events of Class Officers Weekend were attended to, a convivial group of local '38s gathered with the officers Saturday evening for cocktails and supper at Fran and Gil Tanis's. The party was all the more "above and beyond" in that Fran had been out of town most of the week helping with a brand new grandson, a happy chore she resumed after the Hanover festivities. She had an able (and delicious) assist from Tina Towne and Bev Dawkins.

Eddie Chamberlain '36, retiring after 23 years as director of admissions, re-ceived a special issue of "The Dart-O-Mouth" at a testimonial dinner in Bostonin April. Chamberlain will add to his total of 43 years on the Dartmouth administration; he is staying on the job as a special assistant to the President.
