The main event of the past month, for this novice class secretary anyway, has to be the Class Officers Weekend, May 4-5.
It seemed to me that the entire operation was a tremendously impressive example of organization and planning. If there were hitches, they didn't show. Scheduled events, and there were many. began and ended on time; speakers, and there were many, said what they had to say concisely and well; and the many necessary transformations of Alumni Hall in Hopkins Center from reception room to banquet room to lecture room, and back again, rivaled those change-overs that used to have to be made at Madison Square Garden, with the last day of the circus, followed by a hockey game, followed by a boxing card.
Undoubtedly the most heart-warming event for '38ers was the presentation of a Dartmouth Alumni Award to Bob Manegold. As the Alumni Awards Committee of the Alumni Council has stated, the primary criterion the committee considers is "long, effective, volunteer service to the College." Bob's many contributions to Dartmouth over his going-on 35 years as an alumnus make him a more-than-worthy recipient. He is surely deserving of the congratulations of us all.
Many College administration members spoke on many topics. Of perhaps particular interest to alumni of our vintage, I thought, were the talks by Albert T. T. Cook Jr. '62, of the Office of the Secretary, on job placement, and by Eddie Chamberlain '36, on Admissions. The job placement that Al Cook was discussing was not in the area of career planning or decisions on life-work - at least not primarily or necessarily - but rather on the efforts which the College has made to elicit the aid of alumni, in various industries and various areas, to help undergraduates find employment during their term or terms off under the Dartmouth Plan of year-round operation. Terms off are inherent in the Dartmouth Plan, and employment during their terms off is vitally important to Dartmouth students. The marshalling of alumni assistance to this end was most interestingly and encouragingly described by the speaker. Alumni who believed they could be of service in this connection are urged to communicate'with Albert T. T. Cook Jr. in Crosby Hall.
Eddie Chamberlain gave a rapid-fire, fact- and figure-filled run-down on the life of an Admissions Director at Dartmouth today. The achievement of an outstanding freshman class mix of men and women from the many thousand applications his office receives seems the neatest trick of this or any year, but Eddie and his staff are continuing to accomplish it year after year.
With the weekend calendar of College-planned events pretty full, president Paul Urion scheduled a 38 class officers meeting for Friday evening at 5.30. In addition to him and me, there were present Treasurer Gus Southworth, Reunion Chairman Carl Von Pechmann, Bequest Chairman Bob Manegold, and Irv Brown, Scottie Scotford, and Gil Tanis. Class officers who were absent were Head Agent Bob Hallock and Newsletter Editor Dan Marshall,
In his report Paul noted that all our deceased classmates have now been memorialized by gifts of books to the College and that the Class contributed $5,000 to the Third Century Fund. Still in the area of finances Gus reported that his projection of the total number of '38 dues-payers indicates a drop-off of probably 13 or 14 men from last year's high of 378. This is disappointing. Gus is a edicated and hard-working treasurer. His passing on to me comments which some dues-payers have made to him has been most helpful. I'd like to be helpful to him, and to the Class of '38, in return, by re-urging those of you who haven't paid your class dues yet Please to do so. As you all know, a portion of our dues pays our subscriptions to the Alumni Magazine. Non-dues-paying magazing recipients are getting something for nothing. It seems to me that there's a personal commitment here, and that non-payment leaves the non-dues-payer in sort of a morally uncomfortable position. Much of the rest of the class meeting was devoted to longer-range thoughts and plans for our 35th a year from now and shorter-range ideas for an informal reunion some football weekend next fall, or gatherings before or after all the home games. Watch for further details on these projects in subsequent Pace Setters or AlumniMagazine class notes. With particular reference to our 35th, Carl wants to make it perfectly clear that he will welcome all offers of help and all practical suggestions.
