I was reminded of our years in Hanover when I read recently a story about the Orozco murals which Jose Clemente Orozco painted in 1932-34 when he was Dartmouth's artist-in-residence. Remember walking through or studying in the reserve corridor in Baker Library with those colossal murals all around you? They are one of the greatest Mexican works of art of this century and recently have been the focus of a reexamination by Latin-American specialists and art historians. An important part of the Hanover scene then and now and an example of what made the Dartmouth experience worthwhile for us.
I have yet to see my first column in print; the September issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE seems to have gone astray. I've had some feedback, though, positive so far, and so I guess I'll keep on going. Sort of like writing in a vacuum. Keep those cards and letters coming . . . !
The honor of the first response to my column goes to Sue Given, spouse of Bob Given, Jr. The Givens, from Reading, Mass., would have liked to be at the 15th but found themselves otherwise occupied after the birth of their first child, Scott Robert, on May 5. Bob is with Raytheon (Lowell, Mass.) where he has been promoted to division general accounting manager of the missile systems division. Keep up the good work! Bob and Sue attended the Dartmouth-Harvard game last year but didn't see any classmates. Their presence at the game must have brought the Big Green team luck as they snapped Harvard's five-year winning streak!
Thanks for the note. Sue. Anyone else who wants to do likewise will be duly recognized with appreciation.
As we might have said in earlier times, a W—H—W—for Alan B. Spitzer of Washington Township, N.J., who has joined the ranks of the upwardly mobile. Alan, an economics major at Dartmouth who later earned an M.B.A. from Stanford, was recently appointed manager of the financial analysis department in the finance division of Hoffmann-Laßoche, Inc., Nutley, N.J. In this position he will be responsible for the review of corporate capital expenditures, the financial evaluation of acquisitions, and the assessment of licensing opportunities. Alan joined Laßoche in 1974 as a financial analyst after serving in a similar position at 1.8.M. He became a senior financial analyst in 1975 and was named manager of pricing analysis in 1976, the position he held until his recent appointment.
Jack Heidbrink's first newsletter was a good one, and I trust you all received it. If not, let me know and we'll send another. Jack and I will be splitting the communications duties in some yetto-be-determined way which no doubt will be eminently logical. Suffice to say we both need ideas and information from you all so we will have material to decide about. Let us hear from you soon.
The newsletter prompted Jay Wright to send a note from McLean, Va., where he and Meredith have lived for a number of years with their two children, Kristen and Spencer. A follow-up phone call (the note didn't say what they were up to) found Jay still in private practice (five years), affiliated with the Washington law firm of Hughes, Hubbard and Reed. He specializes in litigation, trials, and appeal-type work mainly for business people with some interaction with the government; also securities cases. When I called, Meredith was studying for exams, intent on science and professional courses leading to a nursing degree. She's considering either nursing practice or the healthcare field. Jay is on the board of trustees of his church and is becoming active in civic affairs. He is on the board of the McLean Citizens Association, an organization which serves as a general forum on local issues, and he occasionally gets to luncheons of the Washington, D.C., Dartmouth Club. Jay and his family look forward to vacationing in New England next summer.
Jay reports that he sees both Marc Efron and Tom Wise occasionally. Marc is a lawyer in Washington, D.C., and his wife is an art consultant who helps companies select art work for inhouse display.
Tom Wise, another resident of McLean, is a psychiatrist who is now head of the Psychiatry Department at Fairfax Hospital. If either of you have anything to add, drop me a line. It's now late at night and the muse is tired at least she's (more inspirational than it's) not offering any more creative thoughts so I'll sign off. By the time this is printed I hope to have seen some of you at the Yale game or elsewhere. To date the record is not in our favor, but maybe Harvard will get us back on track. After all, the main part of the season is covered with Ivy and we want to keep that green!
As a last note, if you want to have your say in the administration of the College, you have two opportunities. The presidential search committee is looking for nominations for a replacement for President Kemeny and the Alumni Council will be nominating two alumni trustees. If you have some thoughts, send them in. It's your College and it needs you.
Happy days!
