This month's column might well be termed the "New England Report," fitting since it's being written during this annual fall foliage spectacular when the reliable green of summer bursts into a wild palette of color before succumbing to the somber gray press of a long winter.

It's the kind of scene David Godine captures in word and picture in the select and crafted books he publishes in Boston under the David R. Godine imprint. He's been hard at it for a decade and earned a reputation for excellence and quality. His latest, A Book for Boston, commemorating the Hub's 350th anniversary, is now available . . . only, of course, in hard cover.

From New London, N.H., comes word that Terry Lowd, director of the New London Hospital, has been appointed a member of the National Commission on Nursing jointly sponsored by the American Hospital Association and the Hospital Research and Educational Trust. The Commission provides a forum for tackling nursing and hospital problems nationwide.

In Connecticut, George Trumbull has assumed increased responsibilities at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. As vice president, George is now in charge of personnel, data processing, management services, and the medical department. He joined C.G. in 1970 and lives with his wife Lynda and two children in Simsbury, Conn. Chuck Vernon is director of faculty/student work programs at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, where he lives with Jamie, Jill, who is nine, and Andrew, eight.

Back in the Bay State. ... Tom Clarke is a physician in Wilbraham and he and Gretchen now have three children: Dirk, nine, Kirstina, six, and Justin, two. Greg McGregor is in private law practice in Boston, teaches at B.C. Law School and Clark University, is president of the Massachusetts Conservation Council, and resides in Wellesley with Abby, Jennifer, 12, and Douglas, eight. Also in Boston, CalebLoring is a vice president of the First National Bank of Boston and, in the town of Prides Crossing, is husband to Bonny and daddy to Caber, nine, and Caitlyn, eight.

In the Granite State, Robin Carpenter lives in Plainfield and commutes to Cambridge where he is a senior associate with the Management Analysis Center. And Paul Doscher is right on campus as director of external affairs for Amos Tuck School. He commutes from Norwich, Vt., where, right now, Margo, Eric, nine, and Mark, five, are probably raking the last leaves.

Send a few leaves filled with news and information our way.
