In a recent column I spoke of the signal honor paid Karl Williams at the 24th annual meeting of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation. Through the courtesy of Haskell Cohn '22 I now have a copy of the meeting program and the wording of Karl's citation. It seems appropriate to quote a. few words from the latter, which well described Karl's personal integrity and long service to the organized bar:

"Karl C. Williams has been an unfailing and unflinching exemplar of civic virtue and moral courage. Those associated with him in the work of the organized bar, in the practice of law, or in civic activities carry away the impress of a devoted servant of the law, patient and considerate, courteous and kindly yet magnificently strong."

Once a year the president of each alumni class makes a report to the College on the outstanding accomplishments of that particular class. In Pete's absence I have collected all the available data for 1923 for 1979-80. Much of this is routine but some of it never seems to filter down to you who do all the work. Following,

therefore, are a very few highlights about which you should know remembering perhaps that the officially reunioning classes usually have the most to talk about. However, in spite of our dwindling numbers, our Alumni Fund was extremely successful, with the highest participation rate of any class except 1904 and a record for 56-year-out classes. Of 202 active members, 71 per cent paid their dues, bringing us to the top six per cent in this category. The class now pays for 377 subscriptions to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, 142 of which go to widows or close relatives. Ike Phillips has kept us up-to-date with six issues of "Skiddoo" and plans a seventh soon. Our monthly quota of 600 words of class news has been met with each of the eight issues of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Truman Metzel tells me that just during the month of December 1979 two life income trusts of $16,500, two outright gifts of $15,750, and a gift of real estate valued at $18,000 were received, totaling over $50,000 for the month.

At the risk of being repetitive I must again remind you that our 1923 family now consists of 202 active classmates and 204 active or interested widows. Of the latter, 141 receive the Alumni Magazine and "Skiddoo," and many are in close touch with classmates and other widows. At this late date I am not suggesting a lonely hearts project, but certainly an occasional note of interest or concern or even reminescence would be welcome.

A note from Paul Morgan brought us up-to-date on his Cape Cod real estate business: "Marjorie and I elected in 1965 to acquire a home in Osterville and continue to live permanently in Brookline, where I had conducted my real estate and consulting firm since 1945. We tired of urban living in 1970 and I decided to continue my business activities, which during the intervening years have blossomed into an activity I had earlier believed hardly likely. Except for an interval in 1977 and 1978 when I had four Cape Cod Hospital excursions, I have been busier covering the Cape from Provincetown to Falmouth than during my earlier years in Boston."

Forgive the personal note granddaughter Alison Smith's University of New Hampshire girls swimming team apparently needed the psychological boost which came from a 26-point victory over Dartmouth. Next come the New England championships.

Babe Miner, in his usual role of counselor, medical adviser, and good friend, went to Florida recently to see his older brother Paul '18, who was seriously ill. Quarantine and other complications kept him there nearly two months. Paul is improving slowly, and Babe says he is just beginning to catch up on his class correspondence.

Recently honored for his long service to the town of Pomfret Vt., was Elmer I Phillips '23, who also serves the College, as the editor of his class's newsletter.

This 1979 Annual Report is dedicated Jo ELMER I PHILLIPS for 30 years of service as Pom fret Town Auditor
