It's still summer as these notes are being written, but it will be mid-fall when you read them and 1938's fall reunion will already have happened, and I'm sure it will have been great. Read all about it, with the names and numbers of all the players, or many of them, in next month's notes.

Events that have happened over the summer include a meeting of the southern New England '38 golf group, as reported in a good letter from Jack Lutz. Jack wrote, "We had our largest group get-together recently at host Brad Jenkins's course in Duxbury, Mass.

"Preceded by cocktails and lunch at Brad's home, with Brad's lovely wife Ginny as hostess, three foursomes, as follows, teed off: Brad Jenkins, Paul McLaughlin, Harry Conners, and Parker Holden; Luke Nims, Charlie Hitchcock, Duncan Buttrick, and Jack Lutz; and Bob Foley, Bob Egelhoff, Charlie Pingree '37, and Dick Sherwin.

"We had a real fun day and the first of the aforesaid foursomes came in with a net 57 to win the pot and Paul McLaughlin had an individual low net of 63. This is a great group, and we have a lot of fun." Many thanks for your report, Jack.

In late May Gil and Fran Tanis visited Anne and me. Gil was getting ready for his final stint with his Dartmouth Institute. His achievements with this continuing education program were cited at commencement, as well they deserved to be.

It was a great pleasure to have another room- mate of 44 years ago, Ray Ammarell, make his way here with Bobbie during their Maine vacation. And Anne and I also enjoyed the luncheon hospitality of other close '3B friends, Alex and Libby Jones, at their beautiful summer home in Friendship, Maine, down another peninsula.

Sticking my editorial neck gingerly out in last June's class notes elicited a kind letter of support from Bob Emlen. Bob also wrote that he was anticipating sailing in Penobscot Bay in early August and then attending Alumni College in Hanover and environs. "... Our fifth year there. It is always stimulating. I recommend," Bob concluded his letter.

Carl von Pechmann, kind and faithful friend that he is, wrote to say that he and Ellie would be attending our fall reunion, summer hospitalizations for both of them to the contrary notwithstanding. Very glad you're feeling O.K. or O.K. enough Carl, and my sincere thanks to you.

And even as I was starting to put these notes together there came a more-than-welcome letter and picture from Pat Gorman. Unfortunately the picture was in color and couldn't be reproduced here, but I'll quote a portion of Pat's letter; "In June, my wife Mary Louise and I made an extensive trip to many parts of Alaska with the Massachusetts Audubon Society. One of our adventures was a great trip to the base camp at Mount McKinley (now called by its old Indian name, 'Denali') with Lowell Thomas Jr., class of '46 at Dartmouth, in his highperformance Helio Courmier STOL aircraft. Lowell owns some of three charter air companies which maintain the base camp to accommodate climbers who cut short the climb through the perilous part to the top by flying to the base camp.

"I came prepared for just such an occasion, for, tucked in my duffel, I had the official trappings of the College and the class [a '38 hat and a "D" sweater], which I donned for a photo with Lowell, who was rueful that he'd left his D gear at home."

Pat closed his great and much-appreciated letter, "Other than my old buddy Cy McKinnon, who resides here in Louisville, I have not seen or been in contact with '3Bers other than Dick Holt, who called the other day." In closing Pat noted, "There's about a 50-50 chance we'll make the mini-reunion this fall. For dangsure we'll be there next June for the early 45th."

Those final words of Pat's will be music to the ears of Bob Reeve. Having been the maestro of our so-very-successful 40th, Bob has agreed to do it again and chair our 45th advanced one year so that we can fraternize with 1936 and 1937, and scheduled for June 14-17, 1982. Bob's opening official salvos will be mailed in early October, but circle those dates on your 1982 calendars, now, if you have them, or as soon as you get them. Think positively . . . and plan ahead!
