Hats off to Head Agent Gordon Thomas and his tireless band of class agents, who eked out a close one. With a dollar objective of $68,000, they came up with $69,082. However, we fell 23 short of our participation goal of 350, which left us at 61 per cent.
It's now official another flatlander has joined the ranks of the Greater Hanover '49er alumni association. Sam Kilner was named executive director of the Dartmouth Institute effective July 1. Sam succeeds Gilbert Tanis '3B, who founded the continuing education institute back in 1971. The Institute is an intensive monthlong program in the liberal arts offered each summer to students drawn from top-echelon business executives and leaders in the professions, government, and other organizations. In assuming his new responsibilities, Sam will be leaving 1.8.M., where he has held a variety of management positions over the last 25 years, most recently director of business plans with 1.8.M. World Trade Corporation.
Paul Woodbury writes from the flatlands of Dallas of the marriage of daughter Laura 'BO to Alistair Jessiman .'79 last May on Nantucket. Joining in the festivities were Ken McClain, with Glenda Simcox, plus Nancy and Jim Smith. Ken has come across a song, "Class of '49," which all agreed will be well-received by the class. He plans to bring a cassette to the next reunion. Paul also traveled to Hanover in June for the graduation of his son Seth.
Paul also sent along a sighting report on Ed Leede and Deke Jackson as they passed through Dallas, and two Wall Street Journal articles involving Robert G. Reed 111. Two years ago we reported that the "Rocket" had been lured out of San Antonio to become chairman and c.e.o. of Clark Oil and Refining Company in Milwaukee. An offering released in July by Apex Oil Company for the acquisition of Clark says Apex will pick up the employment contract that Clark has with the "Rocket," which provides for a lump sum payment equal to five years' salary of at least $1,325,000 in the event of his termination. Present indications are that RGR 111 has agreed to remain with the company and relocate to St. Louis for one jear, at which time he would be entitled to leave and receive compensation under his employment agreement with Clark Oil.
Class artist Peter Gish had an exhibition of his paintings this spring at the Silvermine Guild Center for the Arts in New Canaan, Conn. Pete, as some of you know, studied under Paul Sample '2O at Dartmouth and then went on to Paris, Madrid, and Salzburg during the fifties. Since 1971 he has been on the faculty of Fairfield University.
That's it for now. Hope to see many of you at our fall weekend October 23-24.
