DARTMOUTH DEVELOPMENT REPORT FOR 1981
OCTOBER 1981

With a great deal of pleasure we are able to report that Dartmouth enjoyed the most successful fund-raising year in its 212 year history in fiscal 1981.

$42,487,408 in gift revenue from private sources was received between July 1,1980 and June 30,1981. This cash realization exceeded the previous record of $36.9 million registered in fiscal 1979, and surpassed last year's $31.6 million by close to $ll million. This historic achievement was made possible to a large degree by the Campaign for Dartmouth, which has boosted annual gift revenue to these $3O million and $4O million-plus levels from pre-Campaign averages of between $l2 million and $l7 million. Dartmouth continues to rank among the leading fundraising educational institutions in the United States in absolute dollars received and remains first in the nation on-a per-studentenrolled basis.

The Campaign for Dartmouth Cumulative gifts and pledges to the Campaign rose from $112,958,778 to $153,902,458 during the year. In November 1980 the Campaign goal was raised from $l6O million to $lB5 million by the Trustees because of the impact of unanticipated high rates of inflation on Campaign needs. The achievement to date brings the Campaign to 83 % of the new and higher goal with a year and a half of the Campaign remaining.

Alumni, Parents and Friends The record high gifts to Dartmouth in this last year in large part was the result of unprecedented gift levels from alumni, parents, widows, relatives and friends which totalled $32.7 million.

The Alumni Fund continued its spectacular growth. The 1981 Fund reached $7.49 million through the participation of 65% of living alumni. This is a national high in participation. A fast-growing component of the Alumni Fund, the Dartmouth Parents Fund, produced an all-time high of $309,485, maintaining Dartmouth's first-place standing in the Ivy League in its annual gifts from non-alumni parents.

The high point of the year was the receipt of a magnificent $lO million gift from Robert Maxwell '23. This was the largest gift that Dartmouth has ever received from a living individual. Among other significant individual benefactions was a gift of $1.6 million from Mr. and Mrs. A. Kelvin Smith '2O, a $1.3 million bequest from the estate of Marguerite Reagan W'o9, a gift of almost $1.2 million from Laurance S. Rockefeller toward a $2 million pledge, and a bequest from Loren Berry P'44 for over $1 million.

The Bequest and Estate Planning Program continued to play a large role in Dartmouth's fund raising by producing a total of $7.2 million during the year.

Foundations and Corporations Almost $6.4 million came to Dartmouth in the form of foundation grants, an achievement surpassing the previous record high of $5.9 million last year. Included in this total was an extraordinary $2 million gift from the Kettering Fund in June.

Gifts from business and industry totalled about $3.3 million, up from $2.4 million last year, representing the second highest year in corporate giving to the College.

Professional Schools Tuck, Thayer and the Medical School Annual Giving Programs also reached historic highs. Tuck Annual Giving produced $424,831 with 49% alumni participation, the highest participation rate among all business schools in the country. The Thayer School's Dean's Fund realized an unprecedented level of $71,960, while the Medical School Annual Giving Program realized $245,376, another record dollar high, with an alumni participation of 57% (which is believed to be a national record among medical schools).

The record-breaking gifts of fiscal 1981 give us reason for great optimism for a highly successful culmination of the Campaign for Dartmouth in December of 1982 and for the continuing financial solidity and well-being of our College.

Detailed results of two of the important programs within Dartmouth development, the 1981 Alumni Fund and the Bequest Program, are reported on the following pages.
