The fourth annual 1926 Florida luncheon with 30 attending was a fitting prelude to our 55th reunion in Hanover. Don Church and HubHarwood masterminded this great addition to the class agenda that provides the opportunity for Dartmouth fellowship in an ideal southern location. There is still time for last-minute reservation at the 55th for anyone who has just realized that we are fast running out of reunions and wants in. Just call Art Wilcox, chairman, Greenwich, N.Y. 1-518/692-9252.
Brant and Millie Wallace have had a busy, happy winter at Anna Maria, Fla. Reg andSamie Hanson were dinner guests, and HoltMcAloney, Gib Robinson, and Jack Roberts were among those with whom Brant was in touch. Other Florida news was from the Drurys, who entertained Tubber and BarbaraWeymouth. Health-wise, Sally's broken wrist of a year ago is now healed and Dan's eyes after surgery are now 20-30 vision, so golf is back on their schedule.
Cap Palmer '23, our unofficial West Coast reporter, keeps us posted on motion pictures news. At an action-packed convention of former cowboy movie stars, Charlie Starrett was given one of the National Film Awards, all duly pictured in American Classic Screen, the journal of American film heritage.
Prowling through a long-unopened box of photographs in his Santa Fe, N.M., home, GailBorden came across a snapshot with quite a story. It took place in 1944 in Oran, Algeria, where in an airport canteen filled with French military personnel three American servicemen got together for some English conversation. It turned out that then Lieutenant Commander Gail of the Air Force, a somewhat older U.S. naval officer, and a younger U.S. naval aviator were all Dartmouth men. Another aviator with Gail insisted on taking a snapshot. Now Gail wonders whether, if the picture appears in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, any alumnus might recognize the other two men, whose names and classes are unknown.
Ken and Mary Godfrey had a busy 1980 with a Bermuda cruise in the spring, the Princeton game in the fall, and their annual trip to Antigua, where they celebrated their 50th anniversary. Early this year they had lunch in West-port, Conn., with Charlie and Helen ClareMacdonald, who had driven down from their new home in Heritage Village, Southbury, Conn., where they are now neighbors with Jackand Dot Roberts. The Macdonalds left shortly after for Sanibel, Fla., and the Godfreys were headed for Florida at the end of March.
Bill Hughes hopes Hanover won't need "duckboards" April 2-4, when he and Palmer will be there for a Horizons program. Bill reports a good winter with improved health, and they are planning on their usual May trip to Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford, Va.
President Reagan and Ed Hanlon celebrated their birthdays on the same date, but for Ed it was the beginning of a ten-day stay at the hospital for bladder surgery and the start of new treatment. Both he and Bill Sharp, his freshman roommate, have the same health problem. Miriam's recent letter to Ed told of Bill's and her two new great-grandchildren.
Head Agent Al Louer points out that our participation in this year's Alumni Fund takes on new importance in this our 55th anniversary year, since it has become a Dartmouth tradition that reunion classes are major donors. A month remains for us to make a record contribution to the 1981 fund as well as consider perpetuating our annual giving through the creation of endowment funds through the 1926 Funding Associates headed by Charlie Bishop. Charlie had the misfortune of a five-week stay in January in the Princeton Memorial Hospital for major surgery for a ruptured disc. As of mid-March he told that he hoped recovery would permit attending the May class officers meetings.
