The Chapin School of Princeton, N.J., announced a new head of the school in early February, our own Thomas Thompson. Tom was acting head at the time of his appointment to the top position at Chapin. For those of us who enjoyed the entertaining film Brubaker, starring Robert Redford, be advised that the nominee for an academy award for the original screenplay was Walter Richter.
Congratulations to Larry Griffith, who has been appointed manager of new-product development for the Glass Container Division of Owens-Illinois, Inc. Larry has been with Owens-Illinois since 1975, most recently serving as administrative manager of the Huntington, W.Va., glass container manufacturing plant. Other functions in which Larry has served the company include corporate planning analyst, marketing project coordinator, pricing analysis and research manager, and national accounts manager. Larry is a native of Libby, Mont., and holds a bachelor of engineering degree from Thayer School of Engineering and a Harvard M.B.A. He is married to the former Julia Morrison of Jeffersonville, Ind. Owens-Illinois is no small concern, being the world's largest manufacturer of glass containers and a leading worldwide producer of other packaging materials. It is ranked as the 96th-largest industrial firm in the nation and is one of the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. We wish you the very best in this new and challenging position, Larry.
Noel Augustyn is back (in one piece) from practicing law in Saudi Arabia and is on the faculty of Boston College as assistant dean and assistant professor. Noel broke bread with DanGraves, Greg Marshall, and their wives last Thanksgiving and reports that Andy Hotaling was headed for Chicago. Where are you, A.J.? In what Noel refers to as the "mezzo-occident" (Chicago), we were pleased to join Fred andSally Floberg and a full house of alumni for a fine performance by the Dartmouth Glee Club at Northwestern University. The group was on their spring tour, and not only do they sing well, but they road trip well, performing in a different city every night!
Yet another transplanted New Englander has appeared in Chicago, Dr. Norm Silverman, who is an assistant professor in the division of cardio-thoracic surgery at the University of Illinois Medical Center, having wrapped up his residency in the same field at Duke University in June of last year. At his writing, Norm was planning to run in the Boston B.A.A. Marathon in April wearing a Dartmouth T-shirt, so perhaps some of you fellow contestants or spectators saw him in person. Norman, and Penny reside in Oak Park, I11., with their three "future Big Greeners," David, Leah, and Jessica, ages ten, eight, and three respectively. The Silvermans have also enjoyed attending local alumni functions and are pleased to find such active participation by recent graduates of the College.
