None of the Big Green teams, with the exception of the golf team, compiled outstanding records during the spring season. Coach Bill Johnson's golfers were dealt a setback when junior co-captain Mike McAuliffe was sidelined for the season after injuring a knee in an intramural basketball game and when another junior and letterman, Dave Parker, broke his hand prior to the start of the campaign. The linksmen compiled a 53 record in dual matches but finished first in the New England District I Tournament to earn an invitation to the N.C.A.A. Championships in California at the end of May. It was the first time since 1974 that Dartmouth has qualified on a team basis.
"It was a total team effort," says Johnson. "Everything fell into place during the round on Friday the team played outstanding golf in the clutch." Dartmouth trailed the University of Rhode Island by three shots after the first 18 holes but went on to post a 627-638 victory after the second 18 holes. Senior Rich Horvath was the tournament's medalist, winning the honor on the first hole of sudden death. Members of the team bound for the national championships include co-captain Bill Barker, seniors Horvath and Bill Sherman, and sophomores Mark Trauner and Mike Doherty.
"We worked very hard at getting it going this year," says Johnson, whose team has finished second in the New England tournament for the last three years. Johnson was also looking ahead this season. Knowing that the nationals would be held in California, he took the team there rather than to Florida for its spring tuneup. "It was so they could get used to the grass," explains Johnson. "Now they're going back and can say they've already been there."
Not bashful on the course, Mark Trauner,a sophomore, is Dartmouth's best golfer.
